Biography

The Nile river is the longest river at 4,130 miles long, though there is contention between if the Amazon or Nile is longer depending on measurement methods. It is also unusual for draining to the North and in combination with southerly winds, it made for easy travel and trade. Many ancient civilizations, like the ancient Egyptians, Nubians and Puntites lived on the fertile banks of the Nile. Seasonal flooding deposits rich sediment on the floodplains, providing great agricultural fields. If the floods came late, famine would ensue and if the floods were higher than usual, entire cities could be drowned.

Nowadays, the Nile is dammed to control flooding but that also allows less sediment to deposit. Like many dammed rivers, its delta is slowly sinking into its outflow and the fertility of the floodplains are decreasing.
