Biography
Saa.
He was always curious. Ever since his youth, he had an insatiable hunger for knowledge. Saa went under the clan recorder's tutelage to nurture his mind, and he took to his studies with a zeal even Ra had not seen before. It was not long before Saa surpassed his master, and he moved on to find another who could teach him.
There were few dragons that could offer to teach anything that Saa did not already know, however; even these few had little they could teach him. During his feverish search for the unknown, he became lost in the Abiding Boneyard for some time. Something within Saa...changed, during his time in the Boneyard. His old master discovered him at the edge of the Scarred Wasteland. Saa's body was thin, bones showing clearly under his cracking skin. His frail form was covered in countless scars, some clean and others jagged. It was clear he had been the victim of many battles.
Saa did not speak as Ra brought him back to his home, his eyes glazed and far away. Under a healer's care, his physical condition improved, but his mind was still clouded by the time he had spent in the Boneyard. Saa cloistered himself in his room, adorning the walls in a likeness of the Scarred Wasteland, saying nothing at all.
Ra grew desperate. He knew that his former student was still somewhere in the haze that had gathered around him. In a last ditch effort to help mend Saa's mind, Ra brought him to the Burning Rose Clan and to a particular alchemist, Amoral. Perhaps the imperial could concoct something to help Saa.
When Ra explained what had happened to Amoral, he seemed unperturbed, simply bundling the small pearlcatcher in his arms and sending Ra away. He promised the recorder that he would do all he could to help. Amoral lay Saa in a small bed and slowly fed him a brew to induce a trance-like state in him. Amoral knew this state would allow Saa to communicate more easily.
"Saa, I hear that you have spent quite some time in the Abiding Boneyard. Is this true?"
Saa gave a barely perceptible nod, his eyes still not seeing anything.
"Saa, were you searching for a master to teach you the things you do not know when you went to the Abiding Boneyard?"
Saa nodded again.
"You have many scars. Did you get these scars during your time in the Abiding Boneyard?"
Saa nodded once more. Amoral could see a bit of recognition in his eyes. Good.
"Many of your scars show that you have been bitten by blades. Are you afraid of these things, knives and the like?"
Saa frowned slightly. He nodded slowly.
"Saa, I can help you, if you would like me to. But in order to help you, You must feel a blade one more time." Amoral paused for a long moment. "Would you like me to help you, even if it means I do this?"
Saa didn't move for a long while. Amoral knew that he would have to wait, and he did so patiently. Finally, Saa's eyes moved to meet Amoral's.
"Yes." He said softly.
"Very well." Amoral drew a knife from a sheath at his side. "This will hurt, but it will pass." He brought the tip of the knife to Saa's throat. "On three, I will begin. One, two, three..."
Saa awoke with a pain on his neck. However, he felt a clarity he had not felt in what seemed like an eternity. Amoral was nearby, paging through a black-bound book. Saa sat up slowly from where he lay. Amoral looked up from the book and smiled warmly.
"Saa! You're awake! How do you feel?"
Saa brought one talon to his neck and felt a bandage. "What did you do?"
Amoral closed the book and set it aside before coming to the bedside. "Saa, I have given you the mark of the Nightstalker. The Nightstalker will help you find the knowledge you seek.
