Apollo is one of the Twelve Olympians. He is the son of Zeus and Leto and the twin brother of Artemis. He is the god of archery, music and dance, truth and prophecy, healing and diseases, the Sun and light and poetry. He also is a god of prophecy and the god of justice. He is depicted as a young man, wearing a laurel wreath and playing the kithara (lyre), which are two of his symbols. His other symbols include the pythons, ravens, swans and the bow and arrow.
Hera, the Queen of Heaven, was angry that her husband Zeus was having children with Leto, a Titan, and cursed Leto so that she could not give birth anywhere on the earth where the sun shone. Hera then sent a serpent to eat her. Leto swam to the island of Delos to escape the serpent. The island of Delos was at that time just a big rock floating on the sea, not an island yet, so it wasn't "on the earth". So Leto climbed under the shade of a palm tree and gave birth to her daughter Artemis, and her son Apollo. Delos then became Apollo's and Artemis' sacred land. |
Hyacinth

Hyacinth was a very beautiful Spartan prince and lover of the god Apollo. With Apollo, he visited all of Apollo's sacred lands in the chariot drawn by swans. Apollo taught him the use of the bow, of music and the lyre and the art of prophecy. One day, Apollo was teaching him the game of quoit they decided to have a friendly competition. Apollo threw the discus first, with such a strength that the discus slit the clouds in the sky. Hyacinth ran behind it to catch it and impress Apollo, but as the discus hit the ground, it bounced back, hitting Hyacinth and wounding him fatally. Alternatively, Zephyrus is held responsible for the death of Hyacinth; jealous that Hyacinth preferred the radiant Apollo, he blew the discus to hit hyacinth fatally. Apollo used all his medicinal skills and even tried giving ambrosia to heal the wound, but in vain, for he could not cure the wound inflicted by the Fates. When Hyacinth died, Apollo wept and wished to become a mortal and join his lover in death. Apollo promised that he would always remember Hyacinth and from the spilled blood he created a flower, the hyacinth. Hyacinth was eventually resurrected by Apollo and attained immortality. |
