This marshland was a favorite of both Britney and Mel. They visited as often as they could to relish its beauty and coziness - certainly a far cry from their home back in the Icefield. The snow was lovely, of course, but nothing really compared to—
“Frog!” Mel shouted suddenly, taking off like a shot and unwittingly splashing his husband with algae-filled water. Britney shook his wing to get rid of the water, but he wasn’t bothered. Quite the opposite, in fact. Watching Mel pounce after the brown bullfrog and spraying swampwater into the air with every step put a smile on his face.
Thank the Icewarden, though, that Mel’s purse was waterproof. Britney had brought food along, but Mel was in charge of the actual tea. As much as they both loved the swamp, neither of them would enjoy swamp tea.
Mel held up the bullfrog with a triumphant grin despite his heaving breaths. “Got him.”
Britney took a closer look. The frog was squirming frantically, probably seeing his life flash before his eyes. “Cute little guy, isn’t he?” Britney commented. Mel nodded.
“And slip—hey!” The bullfrog had managed to squeeze his way out from Mel’s grip and plopped unceremoniously back into the bog. “Ugh! You know, being part of an Ice clan, you’d think I’d be able to actually hold on to something.”
This was the third frog today. The others had been just as evasive.
“He’s got a husband to get back to,” Britney said decidedly.
Mel brushed his wing against Britney’s. “Every frog can’t be gay.”
“That one was.”
It was an old joke, one they had first made such a long time ago that neither of them could recall exactly how it came about and the punchline had all but been absorbed into their everyday musings.
