By the time the sun had fully risen, Mel and Britney had arrived at their destination. Over the years, they’d visited this spot countless times, and had made it almost into a second home. A carefully decorated den of branches and pelts, just large enough for both of them to huddle under when it rained. A small pit surrounded by blackened stones where they could light fires, a small pile of firewood, and a tea set, undisturbed from where they had left it last time they had come here.
Mel and Britney loved their clan, loved to hang around in the lair, but this was solely theirs. Their little corner of the world.
“What tea did you bring, love?” Britney asked as they attempted to light a fire with two stones.
“That spiced black tea we bought last week,” Mel answered and flicked a bolt of magical lightning into the tinder, which caught fire immediately. Britney laughed.
“Show off.”
Soon enough, they were curled up together with steaming cups of tea, basking in the warmth of being together. The sounds of the swamp seemed far away as they chatted and laughed all through the morning.
“Hey,” Britney said after a comfortable silence, his heart feeling like it might burst from a sudden onslaught on emotions. “I love you.”
Mel tilted his head with a sweet smile. “Aww, you sap.” He nuzzled into Britney’s neck. “I love you, too.”
