Among the uninitiated, the element of Fire is commonly thought of being based around explosions -- explosive tempers, explosive results. But Mustang, as the foremost initiate of Flame, knows the truth, that Fire is the element of applied Will. The agent of change, the energy applied to the experiment procedure. Fire is about scientific control, not about careless rage. And besides, Fire has other dangers.

The trap Mustang often falls into is that of order. What he would love most is to reshape the world into bright clean lines, where everything and everyone performs their prearranged function. So often, the world fails to achieve these expectations, and when Mustang slips, he is certain that he can force it to behave the way he wants it to, instead of how it so inevitably does.
