Everyone had a secret, something that they didn’t wish everyone else to know. In Taihaku, those secrets were hidden by a thin layer of fallen petals and something akin to an unspoken code. But he wasn’t from Taihaku, he wasn’t from Ouroboros or from Undying. So he told himself that he knew nothing of such a code, just as he told others that he merely sold tea. You look tired, would you like a cup of tea? His small business is booming, he is popular despite selling only a selective few flavors of tea, all of them his favorite. His business is always there, always open, night and day, no one ever saw him sleep. And he never really moves from his spot, behind the counter, his pipe between blackened fingers. Is it ink? Dried blood? Soot from a fire? No one knows, no one ever came close enough to find out. His business is merely tea, he claims and what goes better with tea than a slice of gossip? At least he claims its gossip. But if one were to ask the right questions, who knows, maybe this gossip adjusts? Have you heard the newest incident yet? He knows far too much, too much to be killed off because he is irreplaceable and far too important to let him go away like that. He also wears too many copper bracelets, they click together, carved with runes that tell tales of binding and tying, with imprisoning and chaining down. And yet, he didn’t act like a prisoner, he smiles, narrow eyes and curved lips, too akin to a satisfied cat. The smiling girl visits him often, she smiles through bubbling anger and she is among his best clients, always asks for his speciality which she never drinks. But she listens, when he tells of the Emperor and his rise to the throne. When he speaks of the favorite child and the heir set up to die. Or of the daughter that killed her sister, how useful she would be. How interesting a change of set routines would be. Even an advisor of royalty visits him from time to time, a man known for his hunger and his cunning, yet here he is, playing with his cup and watching steam rise while Loki talks in his familiar sing-song tune that creates a little lullaby of secrets spilled. Did you hear of the Emperor’s best friend? Taking a side is not what he wants to do, no, that is a position for a more active man than himself, instead he prefers to linger on the sidelines. To watch with his empty smile how samurai and knights tear each other apart, all because of a foolhardy wish made by a very angry soul. Or witness the rise of a Queen only made possible because she had rather unsuspected help. Truly, the world’s mysteries and secrets were endless. Taihaku was merely a good point of beginning, why stop there when the map had so many more empires and kingdoms to offer? The copper bracelets with the engraved runes burn bright when he thinks about the mere possibilities and add another layer of blackness to his skin, causing the darkness to crawl just a bit higher. Over his knuckles to his wrist, up his arm to his elbow. They rebuilt an old village far in the east, isn’t it adorable? One day it will encapsulate him fully but he doesn’t mind. He has time. A lot of it. The Red Queen is such a fascinating character within history and outside of it, I wish I could converse with her over a cup of tea. Empires, kingdoms, nations, they have risen before and they will fall again. He watched it begin, he watched it end countless times over again. What was one eon in capture, when the next promised a lifetime of exploring? |
