LIGHTNING-2.png

The wind howled on a dark night as occasional flashes of sickly blue light illuminated the sky. Three pulsing eggs shook and began to crack. From one egg, a baby skydancer emerged into the chaos. Each strike of lightning above reverberated in her heart, and it was all she knew in this dark world. Everything else was shadowy and confusing. She flinched away from the dark forms of other dragons, and her tiny wings flapped against the stormy night. Away. Get away. She somehow knew she had to leave the place of her birth. She was on the run from an unknown presence, but she didn't know why. All she was aware of was the electricity in the air and the urge to fly away.

Charybdis spent months roaming the Shifting Expanse. She made few acquaintances and no friends. Deep in her gut she knew she couldn't stop running. She wasn't safe. Not yet. The days melted together while her main focus was simply staying alive. Still, in the many hours she spent alone, she had time to think. She wondered what force was pursuing her. She wondered why. She wondered why she could sense it. The thought she had the most was wondering if she could ever settle down.

Despite a traumatic beginning in this world, Charybdis grew to love the storm-filled sky and charged atmosphere of her homeland. She never considered leaving it. She never wanted to leave it until one day that will always stand out in her memory. While foraging for food, a deep voice began calling her name. She froze, blue tulips falling from her talons and scattering in the wind. The voice called again, louder. The intuition that Charybdis had followed her whole life told her this voice was not friendly. With powerful, desperate strokes of her wings, she launched herself from the ground and flew where the wind took her.

After flying for hours, not willing to risk a break, Charybdis noticed the landscape below her was changing. The grass was becoming greener and unfamiliar. Above, the clouds were thinning. The lightning that had always centered Charybdis was now behind her.

The hours blended together so that Charybdis had no idea how long she flew. She remembers landing twice to find a quick snack before continuing. She wasn't sure where she was going but hoped she'd find a hospitable spot. Eventually, the foliage below became much thicker and greener. With her muscles feeling weak, she descended into the trees and collapsed on the leafy forest floor. She quickly fell asleep to the sounds of animals.

Charybdis was awoken by strange voices. Blearily getting up, she found herself staring into lightning, and electricity bounced off her scales. Taking a step back and blinking a couple times, she realized a lightning primal pearlcatcher stood in front of her. Next to him was a tundra who almost blended into the forest background, and a blue fae hovered above the tundra. "I'm sorry..." she stuttered out, unable to look away from those lightning eyes. "Am I trespassing here?"

"Don't worry about it. Are you lost?" asked the tundra.

"Sort of... I don't have a home."

The tundra smiled. "That's not a problem! If you'd like a place to stay, you're welcome in our clan. I'm Gwydion by the way, and this is Melaina," he motioned to the fae. "And this is Aether," he nodded at the pearlcatcher.

"I'm Charybdis. And yes, I would love to stay with you."

After replenishing her energy, Charybdis woke up the next morning and was struck by an unfamiliar feeling. She had no urge to run. She felt safe, something she had never experienced before. Whatever had been pursuing her for her whole life couldn't reach her in this distant territory. Grinning, Charybdis looked around the leafy lair. A few dragons were flying about, and a hunting expedition was returning. She didn't mind her new, strange surroundings. Aether was nearby, radiating currents of electricity, and that made her feel at home.

As the days passed by, Charybdis realized she wouldn't be leaving this new clan. She and Aether started spending time together, and Charybdis made her first friend. She finally had a home, and she was happy there.
