Strange Job for Survivors
A Haniel Story
Haniel had robbed bodies before. It was her job, stealing from the dead. It was survival. An intact corpse in the Abiding Boneyard could give bones and tools. But she was long gone from the Scarred Wasteland and her pack. Now, she walked around the Hewn City, hoping to gather resources. Sniffing the air, she could tell there was a rotting Bogsneak nearby.
Slinking on the ground, she examined for disturbed dirt, indicative of a body. Some of the dirt was slightly parted and uneven. Seeing the slight difference, she began to dig. The dirt was unusually soft and easy to part. After a few minutes, the corpse was unburied, its secrets spilling into the air.
"Sand Creeper!" She exclaimed, snout wrinkling in disgust. Pieces of the corpse were stripped away and the tools left to rot. Its jaw, left leg, and fifth wing metacarpal were gone. A slit in its underbelly implied the theft of select organs as well. Plague dragons would use every bone and piece of flesh. The Plaguebringer, their Mother, would expect nothing less. To waste resources was disgusting. Who would do such a thing?
Crack, something behind her snapped like a twig. Hissing, Haniel whipped around. She wished her pack was here to help her, to support her as she dealt with this monster. She could sense a burning heat signature next to a decomposing Snapper and slightly warm shovel. It was a Spiral.
The thin Spiral looked at her with feverous eyes. He was hastily cutting open the dead Snapper. Jars of organs were strapped to his long torso. A scientist's coat and journal were covered in disturbed dirt, with blood splatters on two gloves. Once he got the organs he wanted, alongside some bones, he bolted away into the ruins. Haniel wanted to go after him, to bite he who disrespected the dead, but she had no pack to help her. She let him go, before walking over to the Snapper. "I'm so sorry."
Something was on the ground below, trapped under the corpse's tail. Pushing the body, Haniel picked up the piece of paper and began to read it. The writing was crude and quickly done, as if there was too little space for its thoughts. It was a list of dragons, some crossed out. She read every single one, until she gazed at the bottom of the paper.
Bogsneak. Male. 6.7 meters length, 5.99 meters wingspan, 820.43 kilograms. Fatal dueling bite wound.
Snapper. Female. 5.3 meters length, 3.2 meters wingspan, 6032 kilograms. Hypothermia.
Tundra. Demiflux. 3.43 meters length, 2.91 meters wingspan. 346.7 kilograms. ???
Regenerating Prodigium leviathan tissue. The riverside discovery has given me the last resources necessary. I have discovered the secret to life and death. The object of my affections in nearly complete. I will be the creator of a new species. I will Recreate what was lost.
