Nightshade glanced around the clearing he had stumbled upon. He was a loner, a traveler, one who had no home. Lately, however, he had been feeling lonely. And this clearing... He found himself categorizing every bush and every tree, every boulder and blade of grass. He could hear a stream murmuring quietly nearby. Full of fish, he thought, enough for a whole clan. There, across the clearing, a cluster of bushes guarded a crack in a boulder. Nightshade silently crossed the clearing, hopping up on the boulder. There, he could peer down through a small hole into the cave. A perfect nursery for hatchlings, safe from harm. He tilted his head, wondering why these thoughts were crossing his mind. He never longed for a clan before, much less a clan of his own. But something was tugging at the back of his mind, and he saw two hatchlings running around as he sat perched on a ledge, a green dragoness by his side. Where are these thoughts coming from? I've never seen those dragons in my life. As visions of dragons filling this very clearing, arriving at the stream or hugging loved ones farewell, eating and sleeping and raising hatchlings together, flooded his head, he suddenly knew.
He was going to lead his own clan. That was his destiny. He got to work clearing poisonous plants and thorny branches, filling his head with thoughts of the hatchlings and that beautiful green dragon.
Weeks later, Nightshade was settled into his new clan. Here was a place where nobody knew what he had done. Here was a place where the other mirrors avoided, the wild chase never coming close to his home. Here was a place that brought dragons in, the allure of peace and safety drawing them closer. It wouldn't be long, now, until it was time.
The first to go would be that stupid Fae, always getting in the way. Nightshade let out a low growl when he remembered the stuck-up dragon bossing his clan around, and the tiny orange thing breaking his tail. He curled his claws in and smiled, imagining his revenge. Careful, now, he thought, Don't let them know. You're all about peace to them, remember? If they know your intentions, you're dead. Keep it secret until it's time. Don't let them know why the others didn't want you.
____Today. Today they wouldn't doubt him. Today they would love him forever. Anyone that said otherwise would be... silenced. That, of course, included Bob. Wysteria would probably go, too. Will Willow approve? he caught himself thinking. Of course she will. She'll love you, like all the rest. Even with this thought, he felt nervous. Anxiety twisted his gut in knots. Why are you so nervous? You've done this before. You're just out of practice. Remember Whirlpool? Of course he did. He despised Whirlpool. He was going to betray him. He didn't betray me, Nightshade thought, Shark did. He didn't tell me. He was supposed to know. Nightshade curled his claws in the grass, tearing up chunks of earth. This'll be easy. With that, he stood up and walked calmly out of his cave, clutching a birdskull headdress in his jaws. How many can I get voluntarily? He stopped, thinking about this for a moment. Just one. That's all I need. He calmly walked up to Willow, who was searching the clearing, looking nervous. "Hey, Willow," Nightshade said, brushing her side with his wing. "What's wrong?" Act natural. Willow jumped, wings flaring out a bit. "Nightshade! You scared me!" Her voice was shaky, all wrong. Her visions haven't told her, have they? That would be problematic. That's why she needs this. "I-It's Aqua and Violet. They're gone! I can't find them anywhere!" Nightshade glanced across the clearing towards the tunnel, narrowing his eyes. Aqua's stupid visions told her, didn't they?
That's ok.
I'll get her soon. "Oh, dear," he said out loud, "Don't worry, I'm sure they'll be alright. Maybe they went out to get something to surprise us? Maybe they'll come back with a nice necklace or something. Something to go with what I got you," he lied with a smile. His daughters weren't coming back unless he made them come back. Willow's eyes widened with surprise. "O-oh, really? You got something for me? Oh dear, I didn't ruin it by worrying, did I?" Perfect! "No, my dear. But, while we're waiting, why don't you try what I got you on?" Willow reached out to take the headdress, then hesitated. "What's wrong, dear?" Don't look at the future. "I-I'm not so sure this is a good idea," she said, shaking. "I-It's all dark from here! Nightshade, what did you do to th-" She was cut off by Nightshade shoving the headdress over her head. Willow went eerily still and silent. Now, how does this work? Nightshade smiled at Willow. Bow to me. He watched in satisfaction and wonder as Willow bowed, her movements almost mechanical. "I-It works!" he exclaimed, jumping to his feet, unable to keep the grin off of his face.
Someone was watching, though. Watching as he forced Willow to bow down, to fly up high in the air and come sailing back down with just a thought. The dragon snarled in disgust. "So the time has come," she murmured, stalking off through the trees, keeping the eyes running down her body fixed on Nightshade.
____After deciding for sure that his plan had worked, he pushed through some tall grasses to the rest of the clan. Wysteria was perched on a high boulder, the two eyes on her head closed as she bathed in the moonlight. The eyes on her body, though, were open, staring at various places in the lair. She's probably asleep, though. Maybe those eyes can't close. Bob was perched on a branch, watching the dragons below, but he kept glancing over at Nightshade. They don't know what's going on, he reassured himself. Bob glanced over at Wysteria and flicked his tail ever so slightly. The eye that was watching him blinked in response. Nightshade glared up at Bob and let out a low growl. He couldn't help it. He knew. Bob had to go now. Nightshade opened his wings slightly, bunching his hind legs up. Bob looked down at him again and his eyes widened, but he had no more time to react before Nightshade jumped up and grabbed the Fae's tail with his jaws. Bob let out a shriek and tried to get away.
But it didn't work. Nightshade was much bigger. A roar of fury came from behind Nightshade and he was thrown off of Bob, who frantically flapped away, shouting something at his startled clanmates. No time! Act now! He lunged at the nearest dragon, either clawing and biting them or shoving a helmet on their head. The adrenaline caused him to black out a little bit, his memory blurred.
Soon, however, it was all over, and he stood in a nearly-empty clearing.
_SCARRED SHADOWS_
____Nightshade smiled, sitting on top of a hill, tail curled over his claws. He'd succeeded, done what his old pack said he couldn't. He was doing exactly what they didn't want him to do. So what if most of his clan had fled? He'd get them eventually. He wished he could see Whirlpool's face now! Intruder at the border, a voice in his head said. Nightshade closed his eyes and transported himself into the mind of the speaker. Perses was standing over a young purple mirror who had her head down. "Violet?" Nightshade asked through Perses. What a surprise! He hadn't expected his daughter to just walk up to him. His daughter didn't look up. "I'll stay with you. Just... promise me my sister will be safe." He grinned. "Of course, darling. Just come with me. It'll all be okay," Violet swallowed, looking nervous. Nightshade walked Perses back home, then moved back into his own mind. "Hey, Violet," Nightshade said, hopping down from the hill to greet her. Violet still wouldn't look him in the eyes. "Hey, Dad." He beckoned her with his bandaged tail, walking to his cave. She cleared her throat. "I'll stay with you. I promise. Just... please don't put one of those things on me." Nightshade held back an irritated hiss. He forced a smile. If it keeps her here, fine. "Ok, Violet. I won't. But you must not run away, understand? Or else I'll be forced to capture you, and we don't want that, do we?" She nodded silently. One daughter here, the other... is somewhere.
____One night, Nightshade awoke to find a tiny dragon trying to snap his tail. Again. He lifted his head up with a growl. "Oh, look who's back," he snarled. Bob didn't even look up, he simply muttered something, his claws glowing a dim red color. Nightshade screeched as a jolt of pain shot through his entire body, eventually fading except for his tail. "You little-" Nightshade howled as another jolt of pain came. Bob looked him in the eyes, head fans completely still as he spoke. "Nightshade. You horrible creature. Enslaving your clanmates, killing those who refuse." Bob narrowed his eyes. "Your tail will stay broken. You'll be in constant pain. And if you ever take this bandage off, you will fall terribly ill. You'll start to rot, stuck in misery for months, until you finally die. If you keep the bandage on, though, you'll only have to put up with the pain. The choice is yours, and honestly, I'd prefer if you died." With that, the Fae flew off as silently as he arrived. Nightshade growled, glaring at the sky he disappeared into. Fine, you little monster, he thought, Curse me all you want. But I still have your clanmates. And I'm coming for the rest of them.
