Biography
They sneered at him, when he walked into town with the pearl clutched in his arms and a glazed-over look in his eyes. They thought he was a murderer; and who wouldn't? Covered in scrapes, bruises and cuts, with that dead look in his eyes and a bloodstained pearl clutched in his claws. He was lucky he was an imperial, or he likely would've been jumped. But no such trouble came to him, though he left town quickly after buying traveling provisions with what little money he had left. And after that, he never stayed in the same place for more than a few days. He kept the pearl close, never letting it out of his sight; it was all he had left, it was his everything now. Soft-spoken and even softer stepped, Velare knows the world is against him and therefore treads it lightly. Socially awkward and emotionally vulnerable, Velare knows the only way to protect himself is to cut himself off from the world entirely. Clutched in his claws at all times is a luminous, beautiful pearl. It does not belong to him, but it's very clearly the pearl of a Pearlcatcher. Most believe he stole it, and treat him with disdain or even like he's a criminal; the majority of the world doesn't believe him when he says it's the pearl of his dead friend. Velare had always been close to Ikivan, the two growing up as childhood friends and traveling together as adults. Ikivan had been a Pearlcatcher, and like all Pearlcatchers had valued his pearl above all else. When he was killed by a pack of bandits, Velare only managed to recover Ikivan's pearl; and he kept the pearl with him, despite the assumptions others would make. Little matters to Velare, other than taking care of Ikivan's legacy.
