Born at the cusp of the New Empress’ reign, an impressionable Challan watched her mother endlessly toil and labor over her stolen throne. Sayuri had done the impossible when she killed the Old King of Rot, but he was hardly their only enemy once word spread that the throne was up for grabs.

Challan and her mother weren’t purebloods – their lineage sullied by commoner blood – and that was reason enough for rival nobles to try their luck. There was little security to be found in their new home because even a trusted palace knight could double-cross at a moment’s notice and Challan, as the empress’ only hatchling, made for a devastatingly easy target. The attacks were so prolific early on that Challan spent many of her formative years plastered to her mother’s side or tucked securely under a wing, shielded from the lethality of royal life. And for a small eternity, it stayed that way.

Gradually, things began to settle. Her mother forcibly brought peace through the methodical slaughter of all those who opposed her, until Challan could enjoy the luxuries of being a princess without fearing for her life during every second of it.

While she may be the heir apparent, Challan can’t imagine anyone other than her mother on the throne. Challan saw how she fought for it, bled for it, killed for it; in her mind no one will ever be as worthy of the right to rule. With the rebels slowly bleeding them of funds and their allies dying off, Challan understands that her mother’s reign is coming to an end and her rule will never even start. While others may be in a frenzy to leave the wastelands while they still can, Challan is more than willing to stand alongside her mother until the bitter end.
