A long time ago, a cruel monarch forcibly took Sayuri's mother and made her a concubine. From their union came Sayuri, the only hatchling to survive the plague sickness that would give her scales their customary spotted look. After a rough hatchlinghood spent surviving the oppressive atmosphere of the palace, Sayuri pulled some forces together to stage a coup and overthrow the previous emperor.

However, even though Sayuri toppled the biggest threat to her livelihood, she was in no way prepared for the burden of being crowned the new empress. It's no secret that the plague faction makes the bulk of its money through the taxation of immoral practices such as slavery and cage-pit fighting. Despite having come from an enslaved life herself and seeing its effects on her mother, Sayuri was both unable and unwilling to completely destroy the faction's economy so soon into her reign. Instead, she spent her life enjoying the merits of royal life and had plenty of children, all while ignoring the turmoil and suffering happening in her own lands. As the plague sickness worsened and began decimating a large number of important noble families, Sayuri gradually started losing control.

With her nobles dying left and right, the slavers were left unmanaged and life for the commonfolk was agony. Finally, a breaking point was reached when a large group of slaves rose up against their slaver and took over a territory. After that, chaos erupted fully. Slaves began a rebellion, slavers completely stopped paying taxes and either fled to preserve their wealth, joined the rebellion, or defeated weakened nobles to take over their lands -- which ultimately left Sayuri and the rest of the royal line with very limited funds and few allies that could truly be trusted.

Despite her advisor's and Tulsii's divinations urging her to pack up what little wealth they have and escaping death with her family in tow, Sayuri cannot. She has crushed a great number of adversaries who all thought she wasn't worthy of the faction crown -- and while the circumstances have never been so grave before -- Sayuri is unwilling to give up the power and title she's held since she was a teen.

If she must die, then so being it.
