A heretical being with golden eyes, a monster neither demon nor god, born of the very Earth itself... or a bright eyed, naive youth for whom the world holds much wonder? Captured in the world below and brought to Heaven, his care was given over to the bureaucrat, Konzen Douji, by the Merciful Goddess, Kanzeon Bosatsu. Konzen was less than enthusiastic about his role as guardian of the youth, but he changed and grew as he became closer with his ward. Shackled and looked upon with scorn and distrust by those of the Heavens, Goku is nonetheless as cheerful and carefree as any child, whiling away his time collecting flowers, climbing trees, and doodling chalk and crayon drawings of his friends— Konzen, Kenren, and Tenpou.

Saiyuki is a manga/anime series whose plot is based loosely on the popular Chinese novels Journey To the West. The series name is written to sound like 'Saiyuki', which translates to 'Journey to the West', but actually reads as 'Journey to the Extreme'. Taking place in a world where humans and youkai (demons) once lived in harmony, there's trouble in paradise as the youkai suddenly start attacking and killing their human neighbors. The series follows the journey of Priest Genjyo Sanzo and his three youkai companions, who are bade to go west to put a stop to the experiments that are causing the youkai to go berserk. Combining elements of action, adventure, and fantasy, the series is well loved in the East, but largely obscure to Western audiences.
