In a bygone age when the Ancient breeds flourished, Perilune’s kingdom had been the grandest in Sornieth. Dragons from all over would come to her kingdom, enjoying the court and some would end up staying to make their home in the kingdom. Theirs was an enlightened kingdom, and life was equal for all. Perilune’s kingdom was legendary; even now, it lives on in modern fairy tales and myths, though she never speaks of it. Higher learning was available to all. Health care was universal. Culture and the arts flourished. Dragons and the environment lived in harmony. Life was good, their kingdom was strong, her dragons were happy, and all was as it should be, or so Perilune believed. She may not have married for love, but her husband wished to protect her from the external threats and jealousies that threatened their paradise, and so he kept the worst of the unrest and threats from her. The Queen knew nothing at all of the unrest until she awoke one night to find her loyal knight, assigned to protect her by the king himself, ushering her out of the palace. Perilune’s husband lay dead in another room, assassinated in his sleep.

Perilune was now the queen of a dead people. Their external enemies had wrought such destruction that most were either dead or scattered to the winds in a single night. The ruler who overthrew them was a tyrant; greedy and uncaring of the people and the land. He ran roughshod over the survivors and the land. The kingdom was left in ruins. A lost dream. Some died from the poor conditions, others died while looking for a new life. Still others found their way to new places, assimilating as kingdoms became clans and the world changed around them. Those who could not adapt wouldn’t survive, and Perilune had come too far to stop now. She was still gentle and kind, but she was far less naive than she had been before her kingdom fell.

Eventually she awoke in new time, a strange time of odd-looking dragons, breeds she had never seen before. Their spoke in tongues Perilune had never heard before, but the lady learned quickly; she had been her husband’s translator when new trade missions arrived in their kingdom. With her loyal knight still faithfully serving and protecting her, the Fallen Queen settled into a clan. Her quietly devoted and loyal knight followed her as he always had. Perilune was his true Queen and he would not be separated from her. On her command, he never spoke about their legendary kingdom to these modern dragons. It was a kingdom best left shrouded in the mists of time, Perilune told him. Their arrival did not go unnoticed by the ladies of this clan. There was a bit of concern from the Pharaoh’s wife, Neithhotep, who was his queen, but not in the sense Perilune had been. For a Triumvirate of Power ruled and protected this clan now. Neitthotep’s role was more of an advisor. But she was clearly afraid that her place would be usurped by the Fallen Queen. Perilune, however, had no more interest in politics. She wanted peace and happiness now. She stepped aside and told Neithhotep this was her time as Narmer’s queen, as advisor to the Triumvirate. Perilune was not a threat to Neitthotep’s power. In time, they pair became good friends as Neithhotep sensed the Fallen Queen was not challenging her position in the clan. Only Lincoln, the Matriarch, outranked Neithhotep, and she could live with that.

With her new friend appeased, Perilune was able to build a life for herself as a writer, and had dragons, both male and female, questing for her hand as her courtly manners and regal charm that were not the norm any longer, but beautiful to behold. They were devoted to her without even knowing why. Perilune refused them all. Her sole love had always been, and likely would always be, her loyal knight. They had never been together in the past for neither could contemplate such a betrayal of the king and their people. Their glances may have lingered on each other a tad too long. Their gazes sought each other out in shared humor. A gentle touch of a hand on a cheek when one was pained. Two hearts that beat as one and knew when the other was in danger. But always, they were the Fallen Queen and her Loyal Knight. Although such class differences mattered little now, Perilune was content to know her knight was always at her side. Their love had never been whispered of by the bards. They never betrayed themselves, neither in the past nor in this new, uncertain future. And though they cannot be together, they will never, ever, be apart.
