The small fae flits from barren branch to barren branch around Memento. He would land now and then, crane his neck to look him over, make soft "tsk, tst, tsk" sounds to himself, then dart to another branch for a better look. After several minutes of thorough looking, he flutters to a higher branch to give a diagnosis.

"It's scale seep.", he says, shaking his head slowly.

The great imperial blinks a couple times, looking up at the tiny creature on the branch. "What does that mean?"

"You are infected." the fae replies plainly.

"No, I mean, what does that mean for me... my future?"

The fae's frill flips up briefly in surprise, falling back down slowly. "Oh. You are going to bleed. It won't be much at first, just sweat mixed with a little blood. In time the fissures under your scales are going to grow. Entire scales will flake off. Your body will be traced with scabs that will never fully heal. Expect scarring to happen. From there... "

The imperial stops him by raising his paw. "Is there a cure?"

The fae tsk-tst-tsks a little, thinking for a few moments before speaking. "You can cauterize the wounds. You can roll in styptic clay. You can bathe daily in salt water and oil your scales to help minimize damage...." he trails off into silence.

The silence seems endless, filled only with cicadas and frogs. It's broken abruptly by Memento's concerned voice, "...And my children...?"

The fae begins to laugh, frills outstretched as he rocks back and forth on his branch in the moonlight. Suddenly, Memento isn't certain whether to pray to or curse the Plague Mother.
