It began as the Ancients arose.

A plague of nightmares spread across Sornieth, moving faster than it had any right to. Some were old memories, passed down from ancestors who had lived through the war-torn ages; some were family memories from much sooner, of those who had endured attacks from the other flights; some weren’t memories at all, but deep-seated fears that could too easily become reality.

After three days, it seemed every dragon had the nightmares. After five, some could no longer tell the nightmares apart from their own memories. After seven, for some, the nightmares were more real than any memory.

Weeks passed, and the situation was only getting worse - until a hatchling broke free of his egg and looked into his parents’ eyes, and in moments, they felt the dreams slip from their mind. They remembered truth, now. They remembered what was real.

A second hatchling of such power was born soon after, and she helped her clan the way he helped his. In time, they moved on, each determined to heal all of Sornieth single-handedly if they had to. As they went, they discovered a second ability: they could alter and replace dreams, turning them from howling nightmares to things soft and sweet.

They found one another in the Sunbeam Ruins. Both of them had come to a clan in the Beacon of the Radiant Eye; when they learned they had the same abilities, they started talking more seriously, and in the end, they asked the clan leaders for permission to join, to stay and have hatchlings of their own.

Their guesses were right - their descendants inherited a share of their powers, weakened though they were. It would take time for them to help others with the nightmares, and more effort, but they could do it.

The question now is… will they?

Hatched the youngest of three, Nosfi was the only dragon in her clutch who did not possess the same "skill" as her father. Yume developed it first, followed by Chipwash as Nosfi's and Yume's skills as Dreamers developed. However, Nosfi's hide, like her mother's, would remain unmarred by the black tar of nightmares. As such, her mother put the majority of her time into her clutchmates, leaving Nosfi herself in the care of her father whenever her siblings had especially bad days - which was unfortunately common. She remembers those times with her father best; trailing after the mute dragon's side, using her innate empathic skills as a Skydancer to read his emotions and speak for him, smiling as brightly as she could when he cooked for her and cooking for him in turn when he was overwhelmed. They were a complicated family, but they tried to be happy, and Nosfi did her best not to cause trouble. Her siblings needed so much, and so Nosfi would ask for as little as she could. Conversely, as her skills developed, she worked hard to be a Dreamer her parents would be proud of. Too hard, perhaps.

It was hard not to hate her siblings at times. She was healthy, she was self-sufficient, she was so mature for her age, but there was never any pride in her father's eyes and rarely any time spared from her mother. When Nosfi began to exhibit the gifts of her bloodline, she threw herself into training - she had so much time to herself, after all. She honed her skills with an unscrupulous claw, refusing to stop until she was the most promising adolescent Dreamer in her clan.

And still it wasn't enough. She was so gifted, her parents must be so proud - and they were, of course they were, but if anything Nosfi only proved that she needed their care even less. She was doing so well studying on her own, seemed so capable where her siblings suffered and faltered, that she freed more time for them. And though Nosfi and sworn that she would never, she began to resent her siblings. There was a certain satisfaction in rubbing her success in their faces. She was more skilled than them, she was healthy, she was better than them.

And she was alone.

Nosfi never managed to click with her peers. Maybe it was her lacking social skills, maybe it was her competitiveness, her cold demeanor, her hidden resentment, anything - but the top of her generation of Dreamers was a lonely spot. She could be charming to older dragons, but friends were a hard thing for young Nosfi to make. She came to say they would have slowed her down anyway.

As a young adult, Nosfi left the clan in order to help cure the Nightmare Plague.
