Biography
Was the law meant to protect the vulnerable, or the status quo? Could the law protect the marginalized, or did its very existence undermine the quoted reason for its existence? Why couldn’t Litigio stop obsessing over those questions? Why did he have to think about them at all? This Spirithood may as well have been a curse to him when he first answered the call to Clan Thorned. The other members of the clan seemed to expect him to operate under the assumption that the law was good, and just, and that therefore he would act in accordance with good and just law. He was sorry to disappoint initially. That just wasn’t how the law seemed to work. Laws that codified bigotry, laws that protected aggressors, laws that protected the powerful at the expense of the powerless, all existed in spades. Eventually, he stopped being sorry for his cynical mindset and learned to let his Spirithood speak for him. Now, he carries himself with the understanding that the law is only as good as the people who make and enforce them. Law is a tool, and tools have no agendas of their own, meaning that it must be his job to make sure it is ultimately a tool used for good. Of course, that doesn’t mean that he carries the burden well. Eternities of cynicism are hard to shake off, and the gremlins in the caves below don’t make it much easier. For now, he does the best he can, though he doesn’t get much satisfaction in the results he gets. |
Important Items
Litigio’s divine companion encompasses the conflicts and paradoxes that come with making sure the law works to help rather than hurt, and the fragility of fairness in the law. Frameworks for laws that support people equally can seem as fleeting and fictional as mimics at times, but Chal serves as a reminder that as fleeting as either can be, they can both exist. |
|
Litigio’s obsession with his first ever scroll case may seem like a bit much to others in the clan, but it serves as a reminder that knowledge is a double-edged sword when it comes to the law. The more information you have about an incident, the more clarity you can gain or the more confusion you can tangle yourself up in, or so Litigio says. |
