DOCTOR "DOC" ENIGMA Laboratory Supervisor | Employee #60030899 | TCC CYOA 2020 So you want a backstory, huh? Why is it that every young dragon who comes in here from the icefields to Dragonhome wants to know how you came to be? Oh no, I'm not bothered at all! I think it would merely be an interesting social experiment: the nosey nature of today's youth. Let's see here, where to begin... ah yes, perhaps with the dragons who raised me... or shall I say dragon. Fact is, I never knew my parents or if I even had parents at all. Interestingly enough, that seems to be the case with several of the high-ranking dragons here in the spire. Perhaps the lack of familiar connection allows us to dedicate ourselves to our work and therefore advance further than those running around chasing hatchlings in our free time? Ah, another social experiment for another day... where was I? Yes, yes, no parents but I did have a parental figure, my uncle. Haven't the slightest clue if he was a blood relative or not, but he raised me none the less. A fine, upstanding bogsneak with a real dedication to science. This was back in the day when dragons didn't see much harm on extensive testing performed on familiars, and yet he volunteered to be his own test subject every time. He downed so many elixirs, shocked himself more times than I can count, and by all means his work should have been the death of him far sooner than it was. I'll tell you what, Uncle Hyde was a true hero as far as I'm concerned, a right proper doctor in the scientific community. Even if he did go mad at the end there.... |
“Progress is made by trial and failure; the failures are generally a hundred times more numerous than the successes; yet they are usually left unchronicled."
― Paul Erdos
It was my studies with my uncle that landed me my first internship here in the spire. It was not unlike your own, funny hat and all. I remember affixing several insect specimen to mine, labeling each part. Half of the other interns were disgusted, and most of the rest were, well, hungry whenever they looked at it but we all got along well enough. I swiftly made headway in the laboratories and became a favorite amongst the staff, mostly because I was determined to take after my uncle and volunteered for any experiment they wanted to throw at me. I've still got an odd twitch in my leg because of it, and sometimes when I hiccup, electric sparks still shoot out of my nose. It's a pretty neat party trick, actually. I suppose that's it really. You find your passion, work hard, and one day you find yourself running the place. I don't know if you expected some sort of drama or- oh right, yes, my uncle? You have heard of him? His legacy does proceed him, then, doesn't it. Yes, it's true, Uncle Hyde took one experiment too many and wound up with too many loose screws rattling about his head. Started calling himself a doctor and kidnapping dragons to run experiments on. When the elixir wore off he would be my uncle again, but the addiction got to him and the cycle would start all over again. It's horrible what he did to those dragons, just horrible, but I have to admit I've always been impressed by how long he managed to keep up the charade. Rest assured, however, my own title was rightfully earned not irrationally bestowed and at this point, most dragons find it easier to just call me Doc. I'll still answer to Enigma, though, if you'd prefer. That's what Uncle Hyde named me after all, and as infamous as he may be, he always told me I was his greatest experiment. Almost makes a scientist like me want to take on an apprentice of my own one day.... |
