I assume you’re wondering how I do fight…” Effluvial Crows who are more versed in magic than a blade are an oddity among their own, and the same holds true on the Akaneiro Isles. Igarashi’s predisposition towards becoming the former became apparent very early on, as one ill-prepared manor servant walked in on her toddler self discovering the joys of summoning snowflakes to rain on the surrounding furniture. Not long after this discovery it was decided she would be given the opportunity to receive tutoring in magic, as opposed to more traditional martial education. ”Hmm… I showed talent and interest for it, when I was little. There weren’t many around me who were in the same position as I. If there was some niche my training would enable me to fill in, who was I to simply ignore that possibility?” It didn’t need to be said out loud, Igarashi picked up on it after a while of having received training: the path she was set on now was one of growing responsibility. Though being the Kudaya’s daughter did not grant her special treatment, it did mean that perhaps a few more eyes than there otherwise would have been were turned her way. Through choosing to cultivate her gift she had made herself out to be someone who might one day become a figure others could turn to for her unique skillset. This did not daunt her, though. Her father, mother and uncle were all pillars upon which everyone else could lean on, and were well beloved as a result. Thus she was eager to step up to the challenge, for what child wouldn’t want to feel wanted? ”Hm? I didn’t wake you, did I? …I may as well introduce you two. This is my closest friend since childhood— oh. Well nevermind then. Sleeve fiend.” When a small, yellow snake hatched from the strange, leathery egg Igarashi had found, it was made abundantly clear that she was now responsible for the little one’s wellbeing. Soba, as she had named him, was her pride and joy, and best friend — alongside her sister Akane, of course. Suffice it to say, when her sister suffered from an injury that blinded her in one eye, it was hard to not feel like she could have prevented it somehow, or to fear for the safety of her scaly friend. ”That isn’t something we really do back home. We use gold thread for embroidering huiwen, a kind of personal identifier on clothing. You can see mine here…” Life became a blur. Lessons with skilled magic users continued, but the question of what to do with her magic became apparent. Like her mother, Igarashi joined the ranks of the gui lie, Shadeslayers, in hopes she might find her calling there. If nothing else, she could at least put her skills to use. She picked up sewing and tailoring as a pastime, but felt that she couldn’t make a career out of it. Her siblings, it seemed, had their lives figured out, either at home or abroad in foreign lands. She began to wonder if the conviction she’d held since childhood had been a mistake, since how could she hope to be a rock for others if she had not a clue as to how she could become that person? ”Say, the style of your clothing, I can’t say I recognize it. And not to claim I’m more well-traveled than I am, but I’ve visited a fair number of our kind’s societies already. Can I ask you about where you’re from?” Home is far behind now, the starting point of a trail of new memories and experiences Igarashi’s amassed. The conclusion had come to her quietly; if the key to figuring herself out wasn’t here, perhaps it was out there. She had heard from her own family tales of lands with other Crows whose ways were unlike their own. She would see these places with her own eyes, and maybe, hopefully, the lessons she learned along the way would grant her clarity and purpose.
