Long Form Poetry Forms of Address 004-002.png
» Xing (Gender)
Akaneige, the archaic language of the akaneiro, has a set of gendered and nongendered personal pronouns. The more formal of them have fallen out of use, even among ceremonies, and the familiar forms are the ones which generally see use in conversation, including as loanwords. The pronoun used is to a crow's personal preference.

Biren - neutral (formal/superior)
Jueshi - neutral (polite)

Benren - male (formal/superior)
Boshi - male (familiar/older)
Zigong - male (polite/younger)

Ruren - female (formal/superior)
Furen - female (familiar/older)
Zimei - female (polite/younger)

The neutral set tends to be used for business or, alternately, on personal preference when meeting someone for the first time or between individuals who are distant.

Generally, the senior and superior set are seen as old-fashioned or snubbing if used, though certain individuals retain the rights to be referred using them based on societal merit and widespread respect.

The younger set, on the other hand, is still regularly used, though is considered as leaning overly polite to continue to do so as an adult. This stems from the younger set as taking a humbling and respectful tone, and is sometimes used in ceremonial or traditional practices when seeking the guidance of elders or ancestors.

Enji and suou traditionally tend to use the formal and younger set of pronouns in the presence of their Akaneiro masters, though this is not required in modern times. In particular, enji have tended to use the neutral set.

Introductions of one individual to another, either directly or in reference during a conversation, may incorporate a pronoun as a prefix. This serves the double purpose of introducing the closeness or nature of one's relationship with the person in question. The person's name is used if the relationship is more familiar, and their zi if more formal, distant, or polite.

» Zi (Courtesy Name)
A crow's zi, or courtesy name, is a monosyllabic akaneige word which acts as a respectful designation unique to each person. Used in place of naming someone directly, the zi is somewhat of a title, though the formality of the language and the speaker's relationship to the subject is modified through the use of appropriate honorific suffixes.

The zi is generally considered an integral part of an Akaneiro's society-facing identity, and is used frequently in signatures and formal correspondence. Alongside one's huiwen, the courtesy name comes to represent a crow's accomplishments and face.

Exclusively a deep, nearly opaque black in colour, this smoke emits a bittersweet smell- entirely reminiscent to that of standard effluvial crows, but tinged with a scent akin to burning incense. As a result of careful cultivation by generations upon generations of crow, the highly visual nature of the akaneiro's smoke has been developed into a fine martial art which combines the movement of one's body along with well-timed and distinctly directed plumes and arcs of viral smoke. This art, which is both tradition and training, is known as "smoke dancing". ____________________ Smoke dancing as a name may be somewhat misleading, as its reason for extensive practice among the akaneiro extends far beyond the connotations of a dance. As much a martial art as it is a performative one, it is also as much a spiritual practice as it is a practical one. Smoke dancing is a centrepiece to the training practices of the akaneiro, and indeed involves a number of foundational items integral to building capable combatants. Breathing, footwork, awareness, balance, and mastery are all heavily emphasized. In an altercation, individual movements can be readily adapted as offensive strikes, acrobatic evasions, and defensive movements. While having a very practical application, the visual appearance of the dance is wreathed in the signature black smoke of the akaneiro, and by highly skilled practitioners, can be particularly stunning in the plumes and arcs drawn by the motions. Smoke dancing has numerous forms and styles, each applicable different purposes and often cultivated both through generations as well as individual development. Pacing and complexity varies from form to form, but frequently blend fast and slow, high-impact and low-impact. Besides the general, moderate style, specialized fringe forms may be entirely brutalistic or highly focused on elegance and poise. Going through forms of smoke dancing is considered a way to focus the mind as well as hone one’s skills. The techniques and judgement formed through practicing is directly translatable to battle, and highly skilled practitioners are formidable in a fight. ____________________ Smoke dancing may be practiced solo, in a collective, or as a spar. Alone, smoke dancing may be used as a means to meditate or train by oneself, and spiritually is introspective in nature; it is an important method of practice as a means of building one's foundation. As a collective, the movements are synced together; it is the most commonly used method of teaching in showing and following by example, though in general emphasizes harmony and a fine attunement and synergy to one another. The most beautiful and stunning of the smoke dancing forms is practiced in this manner, plumes of smoke combining and dissipating almost as though to form images in ink in the air. A spar may be considered a more active application of one's smoke dancing ability, though in some ways may be considered more of a duet or combined dance between participants- participants grow greater awareness for the strengths and weaknesses of other parties, testing their abilities while honing one's own. Common practice has individuals spar with each other before heading out to engage in true battle at each other's side, as a means of familiarizing with one another's skills and limits for the purposes of best being aware and able to support each other in full scale combat. Traditional akaneiro courting practices involve a display of smoke dancing; a culmination of one's skill and abilities, a dance carefully and individually crafted and practiced as a profession of one's intent. One's dance may be responded in turn by their chosen partner as the two engage in a duet-like spar, creating a unique and spontaneous dance. ____________________ [nextcol]xxxxxx[/columns]

» Smoke Dancing Sects [columns]With its place at the centre of akaneiro culture and combat prowess, smoke dancing also features in the formal training of the young of the clan. This, along with the varied styles of smoke dancing, manifest in the form of the major smoke dancing sects of the Isles; institutions which are a mix of formal education, philosophy, and societal influence. The sects of akaneiro have different styles of teaching and emphasis, in addition to methods of selecting disciples, the focus of their curriculum, and as a result, unique social environments as individual collectives. Each sect is headed by a Grandmaster, an individual who as a result holds particularly high social standing in akaneiro society. In addition to deep garnet wings, the bloodline of the akaneiro are also distinguished by the thick, curling wisps of virulent smoke rising from their claws.

____________________

Smoke dancing as a name may be somewhat misleading, as its reason for extensive practice among the akaneiro extends far beyond the connotations of a dance.

____________________

Smoke dancing may be practiced solo, in a collective, or as a spar.

» Smoke Dancing Sects
With its place at the centre of akaneiro culture and combat prowess, smoke dancing also features in the formal training of the young of the clan.

For the most prominent of the smoke dancing sects, these grandmasters sit on council when called for important, clan-wide decisions, and would act as defacto commanders in wartime. Well-learned, masters of their craft, and seasoned teachers, these powerful people of importance influence the societies surrounding them, and set the standard for education.

Aside from the unique approaches to the philosophic, spiritual, and mental aspect of smoke dancing, the general methodology of teaching smoke dancing begins with relatively slow, repetitive drills (the basics being referred to as quill-forms) before moving on to more active, realistic and high-impact movement (claw-forms). As time goes on the young tend to become further specialised in particular forms, with individuals developing specific styles especially suiting their own tastes and strengths as they develop.

The intricacies vary from sect to sect, however common among all are the myriad benefits fully-fledged disciples receive upon the completion of their training; having education, many doors in akaneiro society are open to them, and the prestige and accomplishments achieved in their time studying under a sect follows them into adulthood, alongside frequently long-lasting bonds and connections, both between individuals and within society at large.

Shrines do not worship gods; rather, their purpose is to venerate and pay respects to those of the clan that came before. The shrines scattered throughout the Isles vary in style and grandeur, though all hold some of the akaneiro's most treasured artifacts: the feathers and viral incense of akaneiro generations past. At least one of the clan's namesake akane trees stand at the heart of each shrine, and together tie into the spiritual and superstitious aspect of akaneiro culture and traditions. The general process, however, remains the same between fortunes of formal and informal nature. An individual planning on making a seeking visit can be identified by a pure white, patternless shirt donned as the innermost layer of their robes. Upon their arrival at a shrine, this set of white clothing is worn throughout the seeking process. This aspect of the ritual represents the seeker's willingness to set aside ego and appearances while humbly seeking guidance. Due to the belief in the importance of a balanced, open, and thoughtful mindset when approaching challenges, seekers are to be healthy of both mind and body before being granted a seeking request. This is assessed through the donation of the seeker’s feather. This feather is not consumed in the fortune telling process, however; rather, it is collected by the kouhaku of the shrine for preservation. ____________________ Given approval, the seeker then meditates for the period for which three sticks of fragrant incense are lit and burned down. The purpose of this step of the ritual is to steady and focus the seeker’s mind, allowing them to shed more clarity on their thoughts and, if needed, meditate on the question to be asked. The seeker will then cast their token and the shrines’ token. Akaneiro tokens are unusual in that they are sickle-shaped: one side is rounded, while the other side is flat, lacquered and possibly inlaid with intricate designs of special meaning to the individual crow. The rounded side is known as the claw, and the flat side is known as quill. In order to proceed, one token must fall on quill while the other falls on claw; if both tokens fall on claw, it signifies that the time is not right for any number of reasons. If both tokens fall on quill, it suggests that the seeker should already know the answer to their question. Generally, the seeker is allowed to perform the ritual again from the beginning if they receive either of the “no” answers, however the more superstitious would wait a period before attempting a second time. ____________________ Given the opportunity to proceed, the seeker is then given a bamboo container filled with crow's quills to shake. A single quill will eventually fall through a narrow slot. Alongside the preserved feather the kouhaku fetches the seeker for their fortune reading, this quill will act as a guidecard to deciphering the answer to the seeker's question. The vanes of the feather, demarcated by the dark and red bands upon it, are stripped according to how involved of a question the seeker wishes to be answered. This order, in tandem to the red patterning of the feather are together interpreted into lines of poem. This is the most involved step of the fortune telling process, as puzzling over the “correct” way to read the feather such that the individual strands form coherent lines of poem can take many hours, or even days of mulling over, depending on how deeply the seeker chooses to delve into the question, and the nature of the question itself. The stripped quill is added to the bamboo container, and the seeker braids together the strands into a small tassel. Should the fortune be favourable, especially if fortelling events far in the future, it will be kept on the crow’s person, tied or strung someplace, such as upon the seeker's weapon, wing fans, or sash. If the fortune is unfavourable, the tassel will be tied to the branches of the akane tree of the shrine, in hopes the bad luck will dissipate or be minimized. ____________________ Due to the donation of the seeker's feather at the beginning of the fortune telling process, the feathers held within shrines are tokens of previous generations of crows who have come seeking guidance from their ancestors. The idea here is that when you partake in wisdom, you gain some yourself and can then leave behind guidance for those who come after. The particularly superstitious believe that the feathers are snapshots in time of the original bearer’s values, mindset, concerns, and thoughts. It is not too uncommon to do multiple readings on something very important, as a means of gathering more perspectives. In this way, it is akin to seeking the wisdom of the clan’s ancestors; the feather drawn as a result of the quill casting is thought to be wisdom coming from the ancestor to which it belonged in life.[nextcol]xxxxxx[/columns]
____________________
» Funerary Rites [columns] The akaneiro funerary rites are presided over by the kouhaku, who will dress and prepare the deceased for their final sendoff; a cremation of the body, wherein the spirit is released in the smoke and the ashes are scattered. Instead of an elegy, a smoke dance is performed as a somber celebration of a life well-lived. Some of the ashes of the deceased are collected after the cremation, and in the funerary feast, mixed in with the ceremonial wine prepared for the occasion. A cup of this liquor will be passed from crow to crow to drink from, starting from the individuals closest to the deceased until it has made its rounds to each in attendance; a ritual to strengthen the bonds of the kin group. After the rites are completed, the only remains left is a set of the deceased's claws. The experience is highly intense and not undergone lightly, as the threat of death is very real. Being exposed to incense for an extended period of time actively weakens a crow's immune system such that it is possible for the smoke to overwhelm it and take effect in the form of an induced fever. Ancestral incense smoke it is, by nature, a viral toxin wreaking havoc on the mind and body in order to achieve its results. Strong fever visions are capable of blurring reality and hallucination in the weak-willed, so extensive meditation and self-reflection, as well as peak health, are required steps prior to undergoing the process. The Akaneiro believe that the crows of generations past lend their strength, virtue, and virulence to the generations of the present.

Ancestral shrines, along with the intricate gardens sprawling across shrine grounds, are carefully tended to by the rarest and esteemed of the Aka family- the favoured kouhaku.

The kouhaku are found in the various shrines scattered across Akaneiro. Ill-equipped for combat though possessing a number of unique traits and skills, they act as the clan's healers, both spiritual and medical alike, in addition to fulfilling a role akin to priests or priestesses on account of their striking and auspiciously-colored cream-and-red wings.

For their unique colouration and innate viral immunity, kouhaku are believed to be closely tied to ancestral spirits. For these reasons, especially when seeking guidance on decisions which may affect the clan or have wider implications to those close to the seeker, the kouhaku are sought out to read fortunes.

Maintaining shrines is an intensive, specialized role, as is finding deeper meaning in the often cryptic words of the ancestors. The kouhaku are in charge of caring for and preserving feathers, some of which may be incredibly old. Testament to the expertise and skill of the clan’s kouhakus is evident in how feathers, some centuries old, are still preserved in in pristine condition- often still vibrant and as true to they were in life.

Alongside feathers, a kouhaku's duty also includes the preparation of ancestral incense, a process both intricate and involved. Both of these items serve multiple purposes of great importance in the clan, among them being fortune telling.

With wings dark as though to be black, the feathers of an enji are a distinct, bruised red adorned with a sheen of scarlet. On a careful inspection, the degree to which there feathers linger towards black varies from individual to individual. They may appear to be patterns that can be fond naturally on other dark-winged jackdaws, but in reality they are the outward manifestation of a disease riddling enji from birth.
» The Cochineal Brand
Born wreathed in uncontrollable, scentless smoke, and with streaked wings bruised in appearance, all enji suffer from the “cochineal brand” which numbers their days. The most painful and debilitating effect involves their wings; the sickness causes enji to continue to bleed into their feathers even after they have fully formed, leeching their wings the color of dried blood. Unchecked, as they grow the symptoms increase in severity; the maturity of the wings-and thus of the dragon- marks the end of the line for the sufferer. This is rarely the case within the clan, however; some peculiar stroke of genetic chance created a “cure”. The viral strain of a full blooded akaneiro, scented faintly of incense, in low doses caused a peculiar interaction with the cochineal brand. Suppressing the immune response which causes the painful progression of the disease, the “therapy” of meditating in the presence of an akaneiro’s smoke. Coupled with a certain intense training beginning early on in an enji’s life in order to further combat the progression of the sickness, full fledged enji are no longer in danger of succumbing to an early, suffering death. The cochineal brand, however, is still a sickness that never abates. Throughout their lives, enji will continue having to train their bodies and their minds, even while smoke therapy is no longer necessary. They ultimately live on borrowed time, and the brand follows them always upon their wings and in their blood.
» Abilities
An enji's wings remain dark in color, imparted with additional, peculiar traits unique to the treated stage of the sickness. Enji are able to harden their feathers to a razor-sharp edge and send them flying at a target with a sweep of their wings, throwing knives tainted with diseased blood. The wings of an Enji are lethal, capable of briefly possessing a razor edge. While they do not innately produce visible smoke along their claws, they control the eruption of black smoke from their wings– pluming from their feathers, a smoke screen gives them additional cover and making their already dark forms even harder to track, rendering them invisible to either strike or disappear.

Jasmine specializes in performative arts, hosting, and smoke dancing optimized for covert use. Admittance to the Jasmine Sect involves a simple test: prospective disciples are to hold either end of a bolt of white silk whereon a cup of tea will be balanced. If at the same time the next day the tea is unspilled and the silk is unspoiled, the disciple is deemed to have passed; however, letting go of either end of the silk or setting it down at any point in time means disqualification. The dress code for the Jasmine sect is composed of both the traditional Akaneiro colours in addition to a silvery white. The seniority and relative prowess of a Jasmine disciple can be determined based on the amount of white in their dress; new disciples wear largely white, whereas masters are dressed in mostly black or midnight blue. Over their clothes, all students have white silk drapes fastened about their arms and legs. These elegant accessories serve a double purpose; while they impart a sense of grace to a Jasmine disciple's movements, they also serve to train it. These silks are not removed during the day, and so keeping these silks in a pristine condition throughout tasks and training is no easy task, as their white colour readily attracts stains and scuffs. Disciples of the Jasmine sect outside of their particular dress are less easy to recognize-- however, knowing to look for the impression of silvery, iridescent petals about the corner of the eyes is the first step. These markings are given to disciples depending on their years of study; they gain their first set upon completion of five years, and a second upon the decade mark and beyond. A third and final set is reserved for masters, or disciples who have particularly distinguished themselves. These eye markings can easily be mistaken for a trick of the light or a gleam in one's eye, however catching so much as that is rare-- it's said that only Jasmine disciples are able to recognize one another, and even those who have never met are able to do so by a simple inclination of the head. Members of the Jasmine sect are thought to help one another under any circumstance, with the sect's members making up a network of support throughout Akaneiro, rivaling that of the comparable Dawn Cherry. The grand master of the Jasmine sect is similarly thought to be one of the most well-connected individuals on the isles. Where eyes and words do not

YUEZHOU SECT.

The seniority and relative prowess of a Jasmine disciple can be determined based on the amount of white in their dress; new disciples wear largely white, whereas masters are dressed in mostly black or midnight blue.

jasmine.png

Masters of the sect are readily seen throughout Lanjin society, acting frequently as mediators and advisors; in reality, true disciples have all been approached by individual masters in their everyday lives, on the recognition of innate qualities come to surface in mundane nature.

Hydrangea disciples are identifiable by deep navy accents in their clothing and a trail of similarly dyed inkfeathers along their tails.
