Even formally, there is no single leader or guild-type dynamic, though it is still overseen with rigorous bookkeeping and records. Full-time shadeslaying is a viable career, and such companies on the more serious end of the spectrum may be comprised entirely of such shadeslayers. Companies in general, however, may see a mix of long-term members, interested trainees, and seasonal members, with details of any hierarchy or lack thereof varying from company to company. In akaneiro, one's clothing is highly personalized; tailored specifically for the individual in styles particular to them, each article even when plain is beautiful, unique, and made to last. This plain stage is a foundation for the rest of the process. The design then embroidered upon it is in some sense a seal of the person the clothing belongs to- it includes the individual's unique design, which is a piece of imagery such as a particular animal or natural phenomena. This design is specific down to a particular arrangement of shoots of bamboo. Alongside the individual's unique design, the patterning on a particular article of clothing may also include other symbolic elements which speak to their affiliations, ties, accomplishments, and relationships. The purpose of this step of the ritual is to steady and focus the seeker’s mind, allowing them to shed more clarity on their thoughts and, if needed, meditate on the question to be asked. The seeker will then cast their token and the shrines’ token. Akaneiro tokens are unusual in that they are sickle-shaped: one side is rounded, while the other side is flat, lacquered and possibly inlaid with intricate designs of special meaning to the individual crow. The rounded side is known as the claw, and the flat side is known as quill. In order to proceed, one token must fall on quill while the other falls on claw; if both tokens fall on claw, it signifies that the time is not right for any number of reasons. If both tokens fall on quill, it suggests that the seeker should already know the answer to their question. Generally, the seeker is allowed to perform the ritual again from the beginning if they receive either of the “no” answers, however the more superstitious would wait a period before attempting a second time. [center]____________________[/center] Given the opportunity to proceed, the seeker is then given a bamboo container filled with crow's quills to shake. A single quill will eventually fall through a narrow slot. Alongside the preserved feather the kouhaku fetches the seeker for their fortune reading, this quill will act as a guidecard to deciphering the answer to the seeker's question. The vanes of the feather, demarcated by the dark and red bands upon it, are stripped according to how involved of a question the seeker wishes to be answered. This order, in tandem to the red patterning of the feather are together interpreted into lines of poem. This is the most involved step of the fortune telling process, as puzzling over the “correct” way to read the feather such that the individual strands form coherent lines of poem can take many hours, or even days of mulling over, depending on how deeply the seeker chooses to delve into the question, and the nature of the question itself. The stripped quill is added to the bamboo container, and the seeker braids together the strands into a small tassel. Should the fortune be favourable, especially if fortelling events far in the future, it will be kept on the crow’s person, tied or strung someplace, such as upon the seeker's weapon, wing fans, or sash. If the fortune is unfavourable, the tassel will be tied to the branches of the akane tree of the shrine, in hopes the bad luck will dissipate or be minimized. The idea here is that when you partake in wisdom, you gain some yourself and can then leave behind guidance for those who come after. The particularly superstitious believe that the feathers are snapshots in time of the original bearer’s values, mindset, concerns, and thoughts. It is not too uncommon to do multiple readings on something very important, as a means of gathering more perspectives. Akane petals are scattered over the veil by those attending the deceased's rites, as they approach to pay their final respects. The funeral veil may be sheer, serving the purpose akin to an open casket, or opaque. In either case, it is burned along with the body. Instead of an elegy, a smoke dance is performed as a somber celebration of a life well-lived. Some of the ashes of the deceased are collected after the cremation, and in the funerary feast, mixed in with the ceremonial wine prepared for the occasion. A cup of this liquor will be passed from crow to crow to drink from, starting from the individuals closest to the deceased until it has made its rounds to each in attendance; a ritual to strengthen the bonds of the kin group. How these may be kept or distributed is varied, however a few will always be set aside for the purposes of being turned into viral incense.
