Biography

MAIR - Forgetful Emperor

Encapsulated Mist Scarlet Serpenta Golden Key

The trouble with ruling an empire is that you really must remember where it is should you wish to continue ruling it. Mair hadn't considered that particular point of concern when he first slaked his thirst at the fountain, but all these years later, he occasionally remembers just enough to be troubled by the matter.

Anathoth says it's a product of their long lives. Still kicking long past the lifespan of most mortal dragons, the unusual pair have found certain limitations to their memories. The body may be eternal, but the mind is not.

(And neither is the fountain which has granted Mair youth for all these years, but that is neither here nor there nor of particular consequence for at least a couple more centuries, by Mair's best guess.)

Memory or not, though, it is the duty of an emperor to provide for his people, and so Mair tends to wander through Dragonhome in search of his misplaced homeland.

When he mentions it to passerby, they have a tendency to either laugh at him or look him over with a pitying gaze. How could he possibly be the emperor of a civilization no one in Sornieth has heard of?

Even the Snappers seem confused by his requests. For all their ancestral wanderings, they are frustratingly ignorant of the glory Mair once brought to the land. Conversations with them end in philosophy lessons Mair almost certainly learned in his true youth, and it doesn't matter if he's forgotten them so thoroughly that they seem fresh. What matters is returning to his throne, his home, and spending his days basking in glory.

At least his has no illusions that anyone familiar will be waiting for him. At first, Anathoth's eternal presence gave him the impression that all dragons had unlocked some great secret to longevity. Now, though, he's seen enough dragons come and go to know better. Save for his dear friend, he is the last of another age.

That does not mean his empire has expired in his absence, though. When he set out in search of his precious fountain, he left it in the care of someone trustworthy. Probably a mate, or possibly a council, but the details are beside the point. Competent, effective administration was established to mind the empire in his absence, and it would take the force of gods to overthrow such well-considered power and wisdom.

Yet even Anathoth cannot recall ever hearing of Mair's illustrious homeland. He believes Mair, no stranger to the curious effects of time on great minds, but his knowledge is of no use in Mair's homecoming quest.

At least the sandy scholar makes for outstanding company. What a privilege, to share multiple lifetimes with a dragon of such wisdom and prestige! Many years ago, Mair might have been disgusted by the way Anathoth's body shifts and reforms, leaving sand and grit everywhere. Now a hardened explorer, though, a little sand in his nest or dribbled into his tea is nothing.

But his home, his lost empire. It troubles him so much more than any grain of sand ever could, and he spends weeks away from Anathoth at a time, questing for any sign of the land he lost so long ago. As the weeks wear on, sometimes he catches himself cursing that infernal fountain; without it, he would have lived and loved alongside his people, and his throne would have never disappeared from sight.

And yet he has seen so many wonders, blessed with a body that still functions as a young dragon's, but equipped with the mind of an ancient sage. Who else can claim to live such a life? Even Anathoth has not been both emperor and explorer (as far as he can recall), and there is no one else of such age that Mair can name.

Weary as his search makes him, Mair is lucky to have seen the ages whirl by. He is lucky to have found a friend so willing to trust his tales, fragmented though they have become. And he is lucky to have ever found the fountain that gave him all these years.

It gives him pause, that fountain. Its waters are beginning to run dry, lending him only a couple more centuries. No one else knows of its location, not even Anathoth, and Mair cannot find a reason that it would stop flowing. Perhaps it is simply the will of the gods that he bring his time in Sornieth to an end.

Perhaps they are offended that his presence predates theirs.

Or perhaps he is just unlucky, a misguided emperor nearing the end of his days in a world that once gave him everything.

He aims to make these final centuries count, to have a grand homecoming even if it kills him. His people will bear witness to his glory one more time, if only the world is kind to him at last.

And if only he can remember where he left his palace.

Legend has it that the Pillar of the World was built from the stones of an empire that collapsed long ago. The empire's name remains lost, despite searches through the rubble.
