He used to be a guardian. I hatched it from one of the first eggs I found while scavenging and thought he was gorgeous. Once I saved up enough, I gave him clown/eyes spots and turned him into a ridgeback. Then, after my grandpa died in 2014, I knew what I wanted to do. He was the oldest dragon in my lair, around when even my Progens had been forgotten. Had so many children, was like a pillar that held my lair together.

So, I bought a snapper scroll. My grandpa had always been a large, jolly man, so I kept the clown. He was the funniest guy I knew, and could always put a smile on your face. I traded the eyespots for seraph, as I knew he and the rest of my family would want to believe he was up there somewhere, an angel.

Now, he'll always be with me.

In loving memory.

I don't have anyone to talk to about this. Well, I do, but I don't want to.

You were supposed to be there. It seems unfair, though I know there's nothing that could have been done. Usually, I have time to steel myself. A few years, early diagnosis to let me know to prepare myself. To let the emotions out a little at a time. But it was too fast. You were diagnosed, then died two months later. We were promised you would be okay. That they caught it early, that treatment would make you better. Medicine is fickle, I know that. But they told us it would all be okay. That you would be fine.

That I would still have my grandpa after it was all done.

You were supposed to be there when I got married. You were supposed to be there to make fun of my children if I decided to have them. You were supposed to be there forever. You were more of a father than a grandpa, no offense to my stepdad. You always had a funny joke, could always make us laugh and you very rarely got angry at anyone, except that one time when my siblings and I were fighting and we made grandma cry.

But that was my sister's fault. She's a terrible person.

I felt awful. Like it was my fault. Like I should have stayed a couple of extra months instead of moving to Florida. To make sure you were really going to be okay. To be there for you and see you. I take very little solace in the fact that I got to talk to you once more on the phone. You weren't lucid, on too many drugs. But I heard your voice, even though I couldn't understand you. You chuckled one last time for me.

After the funeral, when I had returned to my new home in Florida, I had a dream that night. You came one last time, you gave me a hug. You told me everything is okay. I still think of that occasionally. The other night you were in my dream again. It was a weird dream, though. It was really just a cameo. I was being chased by something and you tried to save me. It wasn't a scary dream, just one of those intense adventure dreams. It still made me sad when I woke up.

Thinking about you makes me sad and happy. Sad when I think about how you're no longer here. Happy when I remember silly things that remind me of you. Like I heard something on the radio that made me think of you. You would have thought it was hilarious. You always said things like it, "It's hotter than two hamsters farting in a wool sock!" Gave me a little chuckle. Wish I could have told you.

In the M&M store in the Florida Mall, they had little M&M golf balls. I wanted to buy you some, a fun little novelty for when you played, or just to put on display. But I didn't. I didn't have anyone to give them to. I kept it together, though, since I was in public. My husband was there, though.

I always think about you.

You're always in my heart.

I miss you.
