The kingdom is burning beneath you. Fires and Plagues are working in tandem, melting the gold coat off of your rotten-core inheritance and there’s a reason that gild and guilt sound the same. You know about that- learned it in your prince-lessons, had it whispered in your ear by enemies and lovers and the people that were both (your fault your fault your fault like a knife to the back, lies to him but you knew it was true) that everything around you was a spun up golden lie, that it could disappear in a flash as soon as you stopped being the best. So you try- god you try, try to forget him and live as you know a future king should, the way that gets you remembered for all of history.

(he doesn’t understand that- he’s smart and cruel and beautiful but in the end he will be forgotten. it makes you feel better to think this and you hate yourself for it.)

You were not responsible for the past, shouldn’t have to apologize for the clumsy hands that fumbled the kingdom into your lap but you know them as childhood and innocence and power (forgive me father, for you have sinned) and it’s not your fault, it can’t be. It never has been. The golden child of a rotting god- is he the snake or fellow man, the one that you love until they destroy the world? You’d probably love him anyways. Maybe it’s both of your faults.
When you were young they told you to be good - they never taught you how to stand up while the world crumbles around you.
