THE UNLUCKY

an unusually small wildclaw,
born wobbling on unsteady feet.

goat-eyed and short-sighted,
bad luck seems pinned to her tail.

to those who shield her, good will come,
yet ill intentions will be punished by force unknown.

Thirteen was the thirteenth born child of a mage. She was the runt of the litter, the sixth egg to hatch, small and sickly. She learned to walk long after her littermates, and did not open her eyes until months later. When she did open them, their soft yellow glow revealed a contorted pupil which caused short-sightedness, on top of her already unsteady legs. The mage cared well for Thirteen, her misfortune pulling on the poor dame's heartstrings; but when she reached milestones in age and refused to grow, the mage became worried.

The young dragon did not seem to age at all. Perhaps it was a form of karma for the dark magicks that her mother had performed, or it was simply a bad spell of misfortune, but Thirteen did not grow at all. The mage banished her from the family, leaving her small body in a basket far away from the lair. The poor runt could not fly, so her chances of returning to her mother were minimal.

The skeletal hatchling had to fend for herself. Thankfully for any creature which was wishing for an easy snack, spells of bad luck seemed to befall them. Angry Raptorik who tried to steal the basket were blown out of the air by harsh gusts of wind. Wild cats who hoped for a small appetizer would fall into holes nearby, and break their legs. However, when a kind hatchling wobbled up to her on unsteady legs, and carried her down the hill upon which she'd been left, no scars were left upon them.
