Seems Into was right. The crystalline skydancer had warned of a few dragons nearing the summit of their mountain home, and now he could hear the faint sound of their wings against the wind as they soared nearer. The cave entrance is tucked away in the mountain range, but not particularly hidden, and they'd already had to defend against some beastclan hunters and feral mirrors in the few weeks since they'd found this little haven. None, however, had made it past him. This was his domain now, and attempts to invade were met with death. This was why he leads, he reminds himself, as he braces for what may be a difficult battle. Into had sensed two larger dragons and at least two smaller dragons. After a pause and deep inhale, every eye lining Spiral's body shot open, the magic seemingly seeping out of the many deep purple irises, blanketing the cavern's first chamber in even more darkness. The guardian steps through first.

Saskia lives up to her species' name well, defending against attacks from the huge imperial that seems to move with the darkness, though that doesn't really impair my ability to track it, nor the multiple dragons waiting further beyond. I wait patiently for an opening, all the while studying him. A beautiful and impressive force, but thin. His wounds imply multiple recent battles, and he looks half starved. I can only imagine how the others of his clan are faring. Finally Saskia draws him to an ideal spot, and I dash into the darkness, lifting my wing just enough for Aurumethyst to leave the safety of my feathers. I run to face the imperial, and release a burst of wind just enough to stagger him. I whisper: "Now." It was over in a flash, in the most literal sense. Light drove out the shadow Spiral had created, and when he came to, that owl-faced skydancer was still staring him down, while the guardian had circled behind, no doubt preparing a lethal strike. The dragon responsible for the blinding flash, a tiny veilspun, fluttered overhead. The king had been bested, and by only three dragons. The owl speaks. "How many do you number?" He hesitates. Surely an adult skydancer in such close proximity could sense them all. Perhaps its a test? He utters a begrudging "Five." "How long will your rations last them?" What kind of intimidation is this? Do they plan on starving us out, if so why not just kill us now? Not in a position to argue, he responds "A week, give or take." This wasn't far from the truth, they could probably make it last two, but if his initial thought was correct, best to give himself an edge. To his surprise, the skydancer takes out a large pouch and lays it at his feet. "We know how to forage and hunt in this area. This is enough for ten dragons for one month." Between his surprise and confusion, Spiral manages to ask, "Ten?" "Together we number about that." "If you'd have us", the guardian chimes in, "seems like you could use a hand in defending yourselves, at least." "And the rest seem to agree, too," the owl taps his gem, "thanks to your resident skydancer." |
