ABOUT
‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾
There are strange, ancient creatures that occupy Sorineth's moors and highlands and deep woods, creatures who have lived in the half-light and the in-between-spaces since the days when dragonkind was young. One of these creatures is the puca. Pucas are not usually malicious beings, but they are tricksters, and they delight in mischief and chaos. The puca can shapeshift, but they are most commonly seen taking the forms of giant dark hounds, antlered creatures, and uncanny horses. They can be recognized by their distinct smell, which is like wildflowers after rain, with an undercurrent of wood rot and wet fur.
The puca it normally seen at dusk, appearing to lone individuals as a friendly lost animal, always large enough to ride and seemingly eager to help their targets rest their feet by climbing onto the puca's back. There are ways to politely refuse a puca's advances without offending and enraging it, but some choose to take them for a ride.
Or rather, they climb onto the creature's back and must grip its mane for dear life as the puca takes them for a ride. The puca will tear off at a breakneck pace, dragging their poor riders miles and miles off course. For hours, sometimes even days, the puca's rider will have to cling to the beast as it romps and frolics, lest they be flung violently from its back. These mad rides are said to be terrifying, exhilarating things, truly unforgettable experiences -for better or for worse. Yet no matter how wildly the puca cavorts with their captive, they always tire eventually, and will happily drop their exhausted riders back at the same place they were whisked away from.
Like all fey creatures, puca fear cold iron and other apotropaic superstitions, and will refuse any rider who carries spurs, crops, or saddles with them. Puca are not to be tamed, but they can be befriended by those who are tenacious and know their wily ways. If approached with respect and firm boundaries, puca can become very agreeable beings, sometimes offering their assistance to struggling rural and marine communities, or stranded travelers. Their pride will never allow them to stoop to becoming beasts of burden, but for those they're fond of, their magic is capable of far more than mischief.
