ABOUT
‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾
Every so often, a gaoler is born with a deep red mane and off-white fur that seems stained bloody from birth. Typically hailing from the Scarred Wasteland, these gaolers are called "corpse-eaters." They are unique among their kind for craving Shade-tainted meat. To most creatures, anything touched by the Shade is nauseating, and eating it runs the risk of one becoming infected themselves. But the scent of Shade corruption drives corpse-eaters into a berserker frenzy, vision going red until they've crunched down every last bone of their poisoned meal. Blessed by both Icewarden and Plaguebringer, they are some of the only creatures who can hunt the Shade and destroy it completely, their bottomless stomachs preventing its scourge from jumping hosts when cornered.

The gaolers' Overseer Order has many methods of dealing with the nastiest of horrorterrors locked in their fortresses, but even for them, there are some monsters that refuse to stay caged. When all else fails, those that resist any other means of imprisonment, and are too dangerous to be allowed to roam free, are sentenced to an audience with the corpse-eaters. They are the gaolers' executioners, their last means of defense against that which refuses to die and stay dead. If it can't be contained, it must be consumed, and once they catch the scent of evil on a creature, the corpse-eaters will descend in a ravenous swarm, leaving behind nothing but blood matted in their fur. When they aren't hunting, corpse-eaters have a surprisingly mellow disposition. All their rage is directed towards the Shade, and they are indifferent to most everything else, spending most of their time grooming and sleeping until their services are needed. Their fur is rumored to be some of the softest and silkiest in the Southern hemisphere.

Nidhoggr was hatched to a respectable pair of corpse-eaters, with a rare genetic mutation showing the Plaguebringer's favor in his unusual eyes and iron immune system. His parents wanted him to follow the path his lineage laid out for him, to entomb himself in the Icewarden's prisons and spend his days gnawing on the rotten marrow of the world. True, his potential to neutralize the Shade and prevent the spread of its disease was unprecedented, but Nidhoggr desired a different life for himself. This corpse-eater would much prefer to build a name for himself as a healer than a butcher. In his homeland of the Scarred Wasteland, he learned the foundations of medical science and surgery, then traveled north into Dragonhome to seek further teaching from a pair of dragons named Surtr and Skadi: one of whom was a magical healer, the other a Shade-touched warrior who was alive and lucid only by her mate's treatments. If anyone could help Nidhoggr combine his talent for healing with his ability to subdue the Shade, it would be these dragons and their clan...
