More and more, Nadia has become convinced that everyone sees them in a different and unique way that's entirely their own.

Passersby who don't immediately make the connection between him and the wanted posters plastered all around Dragonhome tend to gawk at the vibrant foliage adorning it for a few moments before losing interest and moving on to the next oddity to be found upon the twisting docks of Marultis. To them, he's nothing but a spectacle, a moment's entertainment and then he's gone. Nadia likes these civilians. They don't make his life difficult, and it returns the favor. Everyone wins.

Unfortunately, there are always those who do recognize him. Some leave it be, respecting whatever devious errand he’s no doubt going about. Some, however, feel it is their moral obligation to make a fuss. Then there's a whole kerfuffle and it's all very unpleasant for everyone involved. It typically plays out with loads of shouting, Nadia having to hypnotize the offending dragon(s) into forgetting the sighting, and a hasty escape back to the Dohrnii or wherever the rest of the crew is currently holed up, usually resulting with at least a few merchant stalls trashed and looted for supplies in the midst of the chaos–Nadia is nothing if not an opportunist.

(He always makes a point to protect the merchants he steals from whenever there’s a major fight in the city; it truly is the least it can do to repay them.)

Then there are all the ways the people who aren’t strangers view him: his crew, friends, and especially his enemies.

- - -

Morne, sweet, precious, infuriating little thing… He pays no mind to the flowers and leaves that Nadia hides behind. No, he gets right to the heart of things, and in a way that would get any other dragon struck upside the head but that Nadia can only smile at coming from him, he asks ever so innocuously, “Ma, how did you get those scars?”

How indeed. Nadia can’t even remember getting the half of them. It’s not like it woke up one day and they were suddenly there, either. The scars are simply a part of them. Always have been.

So, with a glint in their swirling eyes, Nadia spins tales for Morne. They’re wildly inconsistent every time, and he’s smart enough to know it, but he never seems to care. He simply listens in awe, admiration brimming over in his pupil-less eyes.

“That’s so cool!” He’ll say at the end of the story, flapping his wings to release some of the excess excitement. Nadia does it right along with him, tattered as their own two wings may be.

In fact, Nadia’s favorite part of the day ever since adopting Morne has been watching him run off to tell the other crew members of their tall tales. Not only do the stories make Morne happy, but they’re an effective intimidation tactic coming from the mouth of a babe. Nadia has caught more than a few furtive glances from the more superstitious among them sent its way after a story-telling session. Damn right, as they should.

- - -

Lesere has always been very… Lesere in regards to Nadia. The automata unnerved him at first, with its probing, unblinking stare. It felt as though smog was making a spectacle of them, as if they were something to be investigated and made known.

The first mate of the Dohrnii has long since realized that that’s simply how Lesere views the entire world. The poor creature had been forced to battle constantly alongside ‘superior’ (its own words, not theirs) copies of itself for years before Nadia and Dross had dragged it from the wreckage. It was little wonder that smog regarded those different from itself with wonder and reverence (and not a little caution).

- - -

Eustress looks at Nadia and sees someone to fix, someone to make better. Nadia shouldn’t–doesn’t resent them for that. She’s the ship’s doctor, after all. It’s their job to fix people.

The thing is, Nadia doesn’t need fixing. He doesn’t need someone poking and prying and experimenting and augmenting and–

Really, he’s fine. The peg leg works fine. The abundant use of makeup works fine. All the stares and unasked questions and silent judgment works. Just. Fine.

With all due respect, Nadia really just wishes Eustress would stay in her lab and mess up her own damn circulatory system some more. That’s all the good doctor is good for, in their opinion.

See, Nadia doesn’t usually disagree with Dross’ judgment, as much as it is his job as first mate to question it. Xe’s the captain after all, and even more importantly, she's their wife. Dross made a mistake taking on Eustress, though. Rescuing them from the fane was enough. They didn’t need to bring someone with constant pity in her eyes to their home.

- - -

Caldera is an interesting case. As the newest member of their little crew, they should know the least about Nadia as a rule. Yet, there’s a level of understanding between them. It is unacknowledged, and Caldera is always strictly professional in his company, but it is there.

(Nadia makes a mental note to ask her about it sometime.)

- - -

Dread doesn’t look at Nadia. She seems only to have eyes for Captain Marley. It’s unnerving, and Nadia has half a mind to go up to the damn potion maker and ask what in the Seven Shades its issue is, but… Well, there never seems to be any ill intent behind it. Mostly just gentle curiosity, and sometimes, only ever in glimpses, anticipation.

Dread must be planning something. A surprise of some sort? Some overpowered weapon she’s been working on in secret to overthrow the augurs that he’ll only reveal to the captain last minute, just as all hope was thought to be lost?

The former is more likely; Dread could just be planning a party or.. something. For what, Nadia doesn’t know. Half the crew doesn’t even know when their birthdays are, Dross being no exception. An anniversary? If it was Dross and Nadia’s wedding, surely Dread would regard them much the same as she does the captain. There must be some explanation, though. Dread has been with them aboard the Dohrnii longest of all, and has proven itself to be an exemplary soul worthy of the highest trust. They would all be dead twenty times over if not for slithers vast wellspring of knowledge and immense skill in nearly everything she set her mind to.

...Maybe it really is a secret weapon they’re working on for the final confrontation with the augurs, whenever that may be. Dread is certainly dramatic enough to pull a stunt like that.

Now whenever he catches Dread glancing at the captain, Nadia smiles. An image of their humble potion maker pompously descending from the heavens proclaiming that their savior has come plays on repeat through his mind.

- - -

Bellamy looks at Nadia and sees nothing but a customer and an informant. Nadia knows this, and yet they can’t help but look back at lace and see a good friend.

Through all the rumors and lies (and unsavory truths) that had been spread about Nadia over the years, Bellamy always stood by them. It knows their relationship was maintained only for the sake of connections, but what Bellamy did for them by simply being there was a fair sight more than what a good many others had done.

Plus, it really didn’t hurt that Bellamy made the best malts in town.

- - -

Nadia has only ever been in the same room with all the elemental augurs once, that one time being when it was ordered to help Dross bust one of them out of there. That was a bad day.

They saw him and red filled their eyes. (There was pity from one though, the one they had come to save, always the same damned pity. Had she even seen herself?)

There was such an instant hatred then in that brilliant hall of pillars and gold, an all-consuming feeling that Nadia had been running from ever since. Nadia knew that if ever he crossed paths with one of them and did not defend itself, he would die.

Despite that, the way the augurs viewed Nadia was nowhere near the worst. (He laughs at the thought. They would totally take offense at that.)

No, that ultimately came down to a certain stonemason.

- - -

Marilla always looked at them a different way each time they met. Sometimes with excitement, sometimes with obvious resentment, sometimes with emotions Nadia didn’t even know existed until they showed up on the wildclaw’s monochrome face.

It was fine the first few times they had to work together or saw each other in the streets, if not a bit jarring. It became very clear very quickly that the man simply wore his heart on his sleeve and held nothing back, even with those to whom he was not well acquainted. That was okay, Nadia could work with that.

Then, when they were on a mission off the southeastern coast of the Viridian Labyrinth together not more than a few months back, Marilla acted as though he’d known Nadia for a lifetime. He even had the gall to say he’d missed it. As best as Nadia could tell, he meant it too. There was such guilt in his voice at that moment, as if some unfathomable darkness had befallen Nadia and it was somehow his fault. That was a bit too much. Nadia found then that it didn’t much like Marilla and their unpredictable relationship with him after all.

They try to avoid assignments he's involved in these days.

- - -

Dross. Finally, Dross.

Everything always seemed to come back to her in the end.

Nadia couldn’t truthfully say that he felt as though something had been missing from his life before they met at Bellamy’s tavern. There wasn’t some magical moment for them where suddenly everything clicked and the puzzle was complete, it was just… a good day. A great day in fact. He might have even gone so far as to say the day the two of them met was the best day of his life.

It wasn’t special because some cosmic force said it was meant to be, it was special because they made it special. It was their day because they both said it was. Dross saw him, all of him, and chose that to be the best moment of xeir life. Not because of just the scars, or just the flowers, not just their brash and careless manner, but all of it, and she decided that all the pieces together made the most beautiful person xe had ever seen.

(It didn’t matter that they were the only person Dross had ever seen. He knew it would have been the same even without the damn Shade covering everything; Dross had said as much to them and the solemnity in her seeping black eyes told him that xe meant it.)

And in that moment, Nadia saw the same in Dross. Xe was amazing. There was so much strength behind that tired snarl of a voice, a power that refused to give in. He met xeir unholy gaze as he sat beside her at the bar, and knew he’d never see such beauty again even if he searched all the world beyond.

It wasn’t quite love that day, not just yet. But they left that tavern together, each with the intent of finding out if perhaps someday it could be, and they never looked back.
