Biography
O U T S I D E R
"EVERYONE ALWAYS WANTS SOMETHING. EVERYTHING IS GIVE AND TAKE. THERE IS NO KINDNESS THAT GOES UNPAID AND NO EVIL THAT GOES UNPUNISHED IN THIS WORLD."
VERSEKA IS SUSPICIOUS OF EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING. SHE LIVES IN FEAR THAT HER MOTHER, A VILE AND POTENTIALLY SHADE-TOUCHED DRAGON WILL COME FOR HER. HER FEARS, WHILE NOT UNWARRANTED, ARE SOMETIMES CRIPPLING AND SHE NEVER RESTS EASY. HOWEVER, SHE IS UNCERTAIN WHETHER HER MOTHER EVEN KNOWS SHE HAS FLED.
WITH TIME, VERSEKA HAS GROWN BOLD AND BRAVE, MAINTAINING A GRUFF CYNISISM THROUGHOUT HER TRAVELS. SHE HAS SET OUT INTO THE WORLD. VICIOUS, SHE SLAYS SHADE-TOUCHED CREATURES WITH HER ENCHANTED BLADE AND MAGICAL ABILITIES. SHE COLLECTS TROPHIES FROM EACH QUARRY AND BRINGS THEM HOME TO PLACE THEM IN A PROUD AND GRUESOME DISPLAY IN THE OLD COUNCIL HALL. SHE HAS CLAIMED THE HALL AS HER OWN, AND ONLY ARKADI DARES TO TREAD THERE. THEY WORK TOGETHER TO PROTECT THE CLAN.
Verseka wrote:
Servitude was the first word Verseka understood. At the venom-tinged coaxing of her mother, it was burned into her brain that it would be her path. Servitude to her mother’s crushing will. Servitude to the throbbing of magic in her veins. She was a sorceress, undoubtedly, and held her mother’s magic in her breast like her breath.
Verseka succumbed to it more easily than her father, who trailed her mother with such dedication and vile reverence that he would tread over shards of glass and searing embers if he thought it would bring her joy and himself praise. She was born into a world where her mother was supreme. Where all else was but a footnote. No pain could be too great, no hunger too deep, no sorrow so shattering that it came before her mother’s plans. Verseka never understood, nay, never learned her mother’s plans, but she carried them upon her shoulders, nonetheless.
She and her siblings bore their mother’s yoke wordlessly, and she found happiness in it, in the quietude and monotony, the simplicity of working towards some great goal, some absolute fate that encompassed her wholly. She was valued, if not loved, and she had been given a purpose from birth. That was something Verseka came to value most of all. She needed not think nor suffer over the small details of life because it had been laid before her, word by word, step by step. She would pour herself into her craft, working with the same dead-eyed fervor her father wore as he worshipped her mother.
But as easily as she had slipped into that haze, she was cast out of it. Her brothers drove her out with tooth and claw and stinging words. Perhaps they were jealous of her. Or perhaps they had found a greater purpose, in protecting her. Regardless, she flew, wounded to her very soul. Her purpose had been ripped away and the world lay empty before her, a yawning maw of decision.
