Biography

Reborn

From the moment Blackberry was born, she was told certain things, and as such, she believed them. She was worthless. She was a freak of nature, a monster. She had not been given a voice because she was not worthy. Around her, they spoke in hushed voices. Her eyes were a sign that she had been touched by the Shade, they whispered. Always whispering. She was nothing. It was just a fact, and she accepted it. It was just a part of life.

It was curious how, when she had been inevitably exiled, the strange dark globule inside the leader had grown a little more. Every dragon, and indeed, every creature had one, but the one inside the leader had grown particularly large recently. It was really quite alarming to her, but as she had no voice with which to tell him, she had done nothing. After all, if everyone else could see it and didn't tell him, then it wasn't important, right? She was leaving the clan, anyhow, so even if she wanted to tell him she wouldn't have another chance.

Nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing. Each step she took pounded out another beat to her own twisted song. But she didn't mind. That song was all she was. It was all she had. It was all she would ever be. She was content with being nothing, clanless, alone, until the nocturne came to her.

It almost seemed an apparition, the way they, so godlike, eyes ablaze, with scales containing the fire of a thousand suns, and stars shining brighter than anything she had ever seen, had descended from above. She felt dwarfed in the sheer presence of the dragon, and it was understood, though unspoken, that they were something too powerful to name. Something that transcends the minds of mere mortals. The appearance of them fooled nobody. They were a being that would rival one of the deities, trapped in the body of a hatchling. And this dragon had no trace of the dark substance that infected all the dragons she had seen before.

She instinctively lowered her head, used to being treated like a worthless servant, punished if she even dared to look up. To her surprise, a voice rumbled, "Look at me, child of shadow. Look at me, and feel your power." She obeyed, and as she looked into those blazing eyes, something changed.

Her power overflowed within her, like a wave, roaring, surging, cresting, and crashing on the shores. And just like that, it was over, leaving her breathless. But something still lingered, left behind. As if something had been unlocked. As if she had broken free from the chains that bound her. And the nocturne looked at her and stood. "You are powerful, and you are great. Your veins flow with shadow, and your potential will soon be realized. Your vision is fragmented, but soon you will See. And when the time comes, you, too, will sing the Hymn, alongside your brothers and sisters."

She wanted to ask how she could sing the Hymn when she had not been worthy of a voice, wanted to ask how she could be powerful if she was nothing, but she could only stand and bow her head in reverence. "Do not bow to anyone, child of shadow." The Blazing one said, a chuckle evident in their voice as they took off. And she was left alone again. Alone, with only the thoughts swimming in her head.

It was after a day that she felt the tremors of her power again. It welled up, and suddenly she felt an insatiable, primal hunger. Her eyes dripped more than ever, and she felt wild, unstoppable. She felt the heartbeat of every creature in the Tangled Woods, slipping in and out of the shadows, felt the roots and gnarled branches of every tree, felt the shadows themselves, enveloping the world in its darkness. And they were one. The thoughts of every creature, the quaking breath of every tree, the silent movements of every shadow, were hers. And their pain was hers.

Every deep, shuddering breath she took coursed with energy. Each step shook the earth under her. Then she opened her eyes, really opened her eyes for the first time, and Saw. She saw everything, and she saw nothing. And most of all, she saw that dreadful thing she had seen in every dragon other than The Blazing One. She saw it, surrounding her, and she knew it was the Shade, but she was not scared.

She was reborn. No longer was she that pitiful imperial who was nothing. No, she was something. Something powerful, something mighty, something ancient that was awakening within her. Her eyes dripped with essence, and she lifted herself off the ground. And she let out a great, fierce roar, so unlike her, and the creatures, the forest, the shadows, roared with her as one. No longer was she voiceless, for the shadows spoke for her. The shade scattered, and Twilight stood, tall and unafraid. The shadow in her veins coursed through her, and she knew what she had to do.

She sang a silent, soundless melody, and the forest sang with her. And it was quiet, but it was overwhelming, something that was pure power, felt throughout the woods. The Hymn resonated within her, the forest's pulse the beat and her raw force the melody. This beautiful, silent song replaced her twisted melody, and she soared, high, high into the air.

The Blazing One descended again, and together they flew side by side, off to join her brothers and sisters.

And the forest fell silent once again.
