Caelum’s first memory is of the frigid, frostbitten cliffs of the Cloudscrape Crags. He remembers huddling desperately against the side of a dragon whose scent he recognises only in some distant, long-forgotten sort of way. Her face is now faded and blurred with the passage of time, the colour of her wings as opalescent and indistinct as the hue of a melting icicle caught in the evening sun. He remembers that her voice sounded like summer, but no matter how close to her he pressed, his limbs never stopped shaking with the chill of that winter night. She left early the next morning and never returned. He still does not know if this was intentional.

Caelum was raised with the Hamamelis Clan. They had named themselves for the scraggly, yellow flowers that they sometimes spotted along the cliffs. The flowers were survivors, they said, able to bloom and thrive, to spread beauty even in this harsh, unforgiving land; just like us. The flowers were warm and bright. During the winter months, when night stretched on for months at a time and the sun seemed but a distant dream, they reminded him of lazy summer evenings stretched across the rare snow-clear patch of dirt in the Snowsquall Tundra, waiting for the clan’s hunters to return from their daily pursuit. Caelum did not feel the Hamamelis Clan was aptly named.

Several of the clan elders knew Caelum’s parents, although he did not. Caelum’s eyes were the same icy blue as those of every dragon born under the Icewarden’s frigid reign. This didn’t matter. The elders claimed his parents’ eyes were the honey-gold of summer sun. This did matter; it marked him as different, as ‘other’, and the Hamamelis Clan—like most Ice clans—had a deep-rooted distrust of anyone they deemed ‘other’. And so, as Caelum grew, he was not taught to hunt with the rest of the clan’s young. He was not taught to fight. He was taught nothing that the Hamamelis Clan felt could potentially be used against them.

It did not matter. Caelum was quiet and he was good at blending into the icefields where his clan resided. It was easy enough for him to slip out into the tundra in the early mornings, after the worst of the nightly cold had somewhat abated, and to slip back into the Hamamelis lair unnoticed a few hours later, with the adrenaline of a successful hunt still thrumming through his veins. It was easier still to sneak out from the lair one evening under the rising summer moon, with the winter chill of that first night in the Cloudscrape Crags still settled deeply into his bones, to follow the winding path to the outermost edges of the Southern Icefield, and to cross silently into the foreign realm beyond.

Children of Caelum and Akral, these dragons are remarkably independent and strong-willed. They have no real penchant for violence, but they won’t hesitate to defend themselves or their clanmates, if necessary. They have an innate love for summer and spend as much time as possible beneath the sun.
