As the leader’s eldest daughter (or at least, eldest remaining) Riverbed always assumed she was the next in line. That was how it went, right? In the stories, the princess always became a queen. The Lair of the Golden Trellis was supposed to be her kingdom. Jealousy prickled its way up her throat and left a sour taste on her tongue.

Riverbed stood, displacing her squawking familiar and the blankets it had painstakingly assembled around them.

"Sorry, buddy." She sighed, her talons hovering delicately above its head. "I've been in the dark for too long."

The raptor gazed up at her with wide, trusting eyes. She didn't know what she was looking for in its gaze. It had no way of knowing why Zenith was more deserving of her mother's attention. Finally, Riverbed steeled herself. It was time to confront her mother.
