They/Them He/Him

The aroma of spices fill the air. Red and orange collide with yellow, creating a grand, sizzling mess. The spell makes you eyes water, the sound makes you begin to drool. It tastes of everywhere, and nowhere at the same time. It tastes of home, of where we come from, of who we are.

Crinkling pages, writing from a thousand years ago. Timeless stories in lost languages, undecipherable code. The colors sing, the artifacts scream. What do they mean? We might never know.

The scraping of metal against bone. The discovery of others, like us, from so long ago. Is it real, is it a hoax? Somebody died here, and their bones remain, whispering towards the sun, sowing the grass from their remains. They had wings like us, horns like us, and yet they were different. The light glints off of the pure white. If only they were here to tell us what they know.

Glittering yellow eyes rise out of the swamp, orbs of sunlight in the gloom. Something ancient, something old as time, rises out of the swamp. They have lived since the dawn of time, a force of nature themselves. A deep growling noise erupts from their throat. The swamp bubbles and shimmers, glinting as sunlight hits the water. Then they smile, and, well, maybe things will be alright for now.

____Silence. That was the first thing they heard as they entered the world. The sun seemed to dim, and the ground beneath them shook. They stared at their claws in surprise. They were too big to be a hatchlings... (wait... how did I.. know that...) A large pop startled them, and they whipped around, their (too big, not big enough) wings knocking into the trees. Staring at the water, they expected a reflection, a gauge of what they looked like. But the water was brown and murky, the most they could make out was a couple roots floating on the surface. How did... did water (what was water??) reflect? Or is this water wrong? Or is all the other water wrong?

How do I know these things? )
The water sizzled and boiled, almost as though it was talking, pleading for someone to save it. It seemed sad. (Could it be sad?) The crack of something big, bigger than them startled the Banescale (Am I a Banescale?) and they clumsily stomped around to find themselves face to face with a pair of deep red eyes.

"Hello little sibling," The Skydancer (Do I look like that? Am I a 'Skydancer'? What's a Skydancer anyway? No, no, I am a Banescale.....what is a Banescale?) rasped, as though he hadn't spoken in years. Carrick (Is that my name?) felt a twinge of annoyance at the 'little' part, but they allowed it to pass.

"Who are..you?" They asked, narrowing their eyes (Does narrowing ones eyes mean you are angry or something else?). They had a deep booming voice that surprised even themselves, even more so the Skydancer.

"My name is not important. What is important is that I have been looking for you, dear little sibling. You are needed again."

"Your name is actually very important."

The hooded (How had they not noticed that before?) Skydancer stared a them until they were quite uncomfortable, then turned around.

"You are needed again." The hooded Skydancer repeated, then flung open his wings and darted into the sky, hovering there as though waiting for him.

Well, Carrick didn't know much, but this seemed to be the safest option, especially compared to staying the the warm swamp (Is that was this is called?) which they knew nothing about. They slowly opened their wings, lifting up into the sky to follow the hooded Skydancer.

---

____The terrible sound of bones cracking was what jolted Carrick from their sleep. Their, well, they weren't sure what to call it (brother, master, boss?) enjoyed changing the breeds or genes of dragons, but in a different more gruesome way than normal. Carrick was just fine with their-self, but some dragons weren't, and when they couldn't afford the safe way, they came to the Skydancer. His, they would just settle for brother, hardly ever spoke. He had gone years without speaking before, and he was currently on a record streak of over a decade. Carrick fluffed up their spines, and headed out of the swampy room where they slept.

Carricks job was terrible, but they were allowed food, water, and shelter, so it couldn't be that bad. They had the hold the patients in place, which made them feel like a monster. And maybe they were.

But today was different.

The Skydancer (His name had started with a 'P', right?) had either taken the dragon against it's will, or she wasn't getting what she expected, because she was flailing around more than normal, as though an electric eel had got her. And the Skydancer looked more unhinged than normal, using some sort of makeshift tattoo thing to 'fix' the dragons scales.

And then the Skydancer brought the tool on Carrick. The worst pain they had ever felt shot up his spine, and they let out a deep bellow, slamming their tail into the Skydancer. And then again and again, clawing at those blood red eyes that had tormented Carrick for so long.

And then it was over. The Skydancer was dead. Carrick felt a little woozy. Had they actually....? No, that wasn't possible.

But the female dragon was gone.

And he... well, the darkness closed around him, the shock, all of it, and he plummeted into the darkness.

A fluffy snout nudged them, fur tickling their snout. He was a dark blue with orange on his neck fluff, a brown hat on his head.

"They're coming to. Hello strange Banescale. We haven't seen you kind in a long time. You're safe now."

Carrick nodded softly, then allowed themselves to drop again into darkness.

____We all know that dragons have powers. No matter the size, whether it is strength, healing, whatever. Some of them are called talents, some are called abilities, some are called what they are, 'powers'. Their power, or what could be considered a power, is the ability to bend and twist themselves however they like. They can flatten their bone structure, similarly to a cat, to get into small spaces. This is honestly how they are often used, as they are asked to grab something that rolled under the hut, or to kill that bug that has somehow wedged itself into the windowsill. They enjoy being helpful like this, and it often makes them grin from ear to ear when someone thanks them.

____Quiet is the first way you'd describe this dragon. A thoughtful dragon who thinks before they speak, and yet doesn't know what to with themself. A sort of melted together personality of not remembering things. Staring out of windows or slowly forgetting the conversation they are in, seemingly drifting off into space. They are innocent, and often don't understand the jokes others make. They, ironically, have the memory of an elephant since after they woke up. They know exactly what others triggers, fears, hopes, and joys are, and remember these things accordingly when they are talking to another dragon. They are surprisingly gentle with those around them, often careful. They are not shy, but just quiet, observing others, not for themselves, but for the dragon in question. They have a certain weirdness to them, a fascination with bones and history that not many other dragons get (Blackbird does though. Those two could talk for hours if the rest of the clan let them). They are a cautious free thinker, full of kindness and dreams if you get to know them.

____Carrick is often covered in swamp water. They love swimming, and on more occasions than they'd like to admit they ended up with a plant or two wrapped around their appendages (Once they got stuck in a waterwheel and it freaked them out. Now they are a lot more careful). They are one of the biggest dragons in the clan, and they have to be quite careful of their size. Their frill has some holes in it, and their wings are tattered to the point where flying can become difficult on bad days. Their horns have gold inlaid in them, and a small tattoo on their tail in the shape of an eye reminds them of who they used to serve.

____Their house resides in the swamp. It is ginormous, and towers above the trees (this is the reason why they live outside the main village).

Their voice booms, and they whisper so they don't injure others ear. They can also make crocodile noices, and sometimes mimic the large reptiles for fun.

Scaring others has become a pastime for them and Blackbird (they are best friends). They will rise out of the swamp, and she will dive-bomb others from the heavens.

Cooking starting off as just learning how to take care of themselves. They ended up being a natural at it, and now help out the other chefs whenever a feast or celebration rolls around.

They run a small library/museum. They display their discovery's there for all dragons to see, and new exhibits seem to pop up quite often. The library does not have fiction or anything like that, but instead contains shelves upon shelves of historical fiction, nonfiction and historical artifacts. The most common artifacts have to do with banescales, and they will often visit the Ashfall Waste to find the relics of their kind.

They named their familiar Sully, after the adjective sullen, which basically describes the familiars whole existence. (but also Raspberry made them watch monsters inc. and they were torn between Mike and Sully no I do not take criticism)

Decorative Feather Fan
Carrick has this fan as a way to stay cool. It's not much for show, but it hangs above their bed, and they enjoy the bright colors very much. They also sometimes use this as means of camouflage, though most of the time it just looks like a giant dragon hiding behind a small fan.

Glittering Bluesilver Torc
Though the neckband might make a good bracelet for some dragons, for Carrick, it is simply a ring. It was one of the first things that they owned ; Labradorite gave it to them.
It has become something a a fidget toy for them, and a tie to their home. It reminds them that they have a place in this clan, and their claws often reach for it when they are nervous.

This is the one bug that Carrick refuses to eat. They enjoy keeping these long-legged insects as pets. They have some sort of a small house/enclosure for them, and gets indescribably sad when someones actually does eat one of these insects. (Eating waterbugs around Carrick makes them cry, so the rest of the clan either doesn't catch them, or eats them while they aren't around them)

Carrick absolutely loves using fish oil, even if some dragons wrinkle their noses at the smell of it. They are very health conscious, and often make a variety of dishes with this oil. (They also take fish oil supplements).
