"Is it...meant to look like that?" He said, leaning down to investigate further.
"It's our hatchling. I had four eggs-this is last one. I don't know why it looks...darker." She was able to dig her way a bit further into the nest, finding more of the hatchling's discarded shell. "I know this one is ours but I don't think that was the intention."
"What do you mean? Are you saying you didn't lay this egg?" He stepped closer, investigating the broken shell pieces with her.
"Someone put it here. On purpose or not, they replaced-" Her voice began to tremble. "They replaced one of our eggs with a different one."
The two looked at one another, both understanding the loss they had just discovered. As they embraced, the young hatchling began to chip away at the shells of his soon-to-be siblings.
