And, here and there, in groves about this grass, like wildernesses of dreams, sprang up fantastic trees, whose tall slender stems stood not upright, but slanted gracefully toward the light that peered at noon-day into the centre of the valley.

Before his curse, August was a researcher/adventurer who was obsessed over justice. As a child, his grandfather used to read him stories of things that happened in the past, and he absolutely loved it. He would beg his grandfather to read him more and more. Eventually, his was told a story that changed his future.

" Long, long ago, there was a small clan of dragons that were very special, for they guarded a powerful secret. A holy tree, capable of healing all wounds, and making the body strong. These dragons lived in peaceful harmony, caring for each other and the tree.
There were many outsiders who came looking for the tree, seeking its power. They always managed to fend them off, for the tree's roots under the earth imbued all the crop they grew on the land with unique properties that kept them healthy and strong.
With all of these strangers seeking his tribes' secret, the leader of this clan decided to hide the tree away, and create a puzzle with seven keys, so only those with the knowledge of how to reach it, could.
He passed away soon after this great achievement, due to the amount of magical energy he had to expend to hide the tree. It is believed that the great Tree claimed his spirit and turned him into an undefeatable Guardian only the true of heart may pass by alive.
Only a distinct few knew the trees location now. But many still hungered for this hidden power. A group of evildoer immortals soon came searching. They slaughtered nearly the entire peaceful tribe. However, in a stroke of fortune, most of the Holders (those who bore the clues and keys) managed to escape. All but one of the seven survived that fateful night.
The remaining continue to pass on the secret, still in the form of a puzzle, in the hopes that only the worthy could crack it and at last find the tree and use its power for good. "

"Grandson. I think you are old enough now to learn the truth. Our family... we are descendants of one of the original Holders. One of the Keys has been passed down to the worthy for generations. My boy, you have been chosen by the ancestors to inherit this great gift."
He pulled a medallion out of his robes, coiling the long leather strap in his claws, before taking August's hand in his and pressing the shard on the end into his palm.
"You must protect this with your life. Perhaps you will be the one to collect the other six and find the tree after all these years....
Do not be alarmed if you hear whispers in your mind. The great ancestors can speak to you through this. All of those who were Holders. They will guide you. I don't have much time left. It is all up to you now."

His many quests to right history's wrongs and find the Keys eventually led him to the lurking place of a centuries-old witch who had been hunting the Medallions and their holders and cursing them, before taking the secrets and clues that they had collected for herself. She had been part of the original slaughter of the clan, all those generations ago.
August had grown much in skill, but he was no match for her magic. She cursed him to lose all memory of his quest and past life, and be stuck as a hatchling for ever more.
But the spirits in the Medallion had grown rather fond of brave, kind August, and they bound together to use their own dormant magic to portal him away, to a safe place were they could find a way to reverse the spell and give him back his mind.

Now, he is a happy, kind child who acts just as normal as can be, but he will often be found talking to himself, running his claws over the odd necklace he refuses to take off.
