python/blend/firefly maybe one day a coatl?

Ish stared at the rapidly flowing river. “Red, are you sure that this is safe?” she asked, gently putting one talon in the water.

“Of course it’s safe!” Red replied, eyes shining with excitement. She nudged Ish’s chin with her snout. “Please cheer up,” she begged. “I’m super excited to finally go into the water with a friend!”

Ish shook herself. What was she thinking? Yet, she couldn’t cast aside that tiny flicker of doubt. “Shouldn’t we at least ask Angel to watch us?” she asked, looking over at the older spiral who was currently eating a spider. “The river looks super fast right now.”

“No!” Red whispered, flinging herself to the ground. “Angel would say no! We’d never get to go swimming then!”

Ish sighed. Red could be so stubborn. But she had a point. “Please?” she begged.

Frowning. Ish weighed her options. Everything could be fine, but… She looked back at the churning waters. White mists sprayed at her face.

She couldn’t be a scaredy-beast in front of Red.

Ish’s green eyes gazed into Reds hopeful gaze. “Okay, okay, fine. But we need to be careful.”

“We will be!” Red bounced around Ish excitedly. “We’ll be so careful!”

Ish grinned, and took a deep breath. “Are you ready to swim!?” Red sang happily. The small Coatl never seemed to be able to stop with her actions, like an overexcited Spiral on a sugar high.

“Yeah,” Ish responded. “I’m ready.”

The two hatchlings waded into the river, getting pushed to the side by the current. “Are you sure this is a good idea?” Ish asked Red one last time.

“Of course it is!”

They walked out a few more feet before the rocky ground disappeared, leaving them floating. Or at least, they would be floating if the water wasn’t so fierce.

It pulled the two hatchlings under the water, then thrust them to the surface, all the while dragging them further and further away from camp.

“Help!” Ish screamed as loud as she could before she was pulled under again. “Angel! Red!”

Red was shrieking, paddling as fast as she could towards the shore, but getting no closer. “Help!”

The next time the water pulled Ish under, she didn’t wake back up.

“What in the moons were you thinking?” yelled a loud voice.

Ow. Bright light pierced Ish’s eyes.

She couldn’t hear the mumbled answer. The light began to fade in and out, in and out, and then left. Peaceful silence, peaceful no suffering. She opened her eyes to see fluffy clouds and pretty blue skies.

“Where are the trees?” Ish whispered. No one answered.

A flurry of movement caught her eyes. A dragon! Not one that she knew, though. “Who are you?” Ish asked.

“My name is Spirit,” answered the stranger. “And I can save you.”

“Am I going to die?”

“Not if you accept my deal.”

“What is your deal?” Ish felt stupid, only asking questions, not giving answers.

“If I save you, then you must remain a hatchling.”

“For how long?” Another question.

“Forever.”

“Oh.” Ish felt concern flutter in her stomach. This was bad. She could either die or remain a hatchling.
“W-will I still die one day like any other dragon, or live forever?”

“Oh, you’ll still die like any other dragon,” Spirit chuckled evilly. “After a good, long life.”

Ish hesitated, then she nodded. “Okay,” she gulped. “I’ll do it.”

And then a smile lit up Spirit’s face just as a strange feeling flooded through Ish.
