Sometimes my skin feels too tight for the storm in my head. Now before you go start thinking I’m some emotional, wimpy loser, let’s get one thing straight. I’m not. I’ve fought battles that you couldn’t even imagine. There’s probably more of my blood soaked in the earth than there is in my body right now. Every day since I matured, I fought in the pit. Today was no different. It just got tough sometimes—living every day with the burden of all the blood on my scales. But that burden never stopped me from ripping out my opponents throat, in this case, a fierce guardian. A shame, she was a good fighter.

When he was a child, his mother used the last of their coin to pay a fate seer -Umrtia- to guarantee him to find a beautiful wife to start a family with. Umrtia said she could give Balafire the perfect match, as long as Balafire’s mother gave her a trinket as a token of love (similar to how stereotypical witches need a hair from someone they want to enchant).
