The small female opened her eyes, and blinked up at the giant faces leaning down over her. Instinctively, she knew that they were her parents, and that they loved her. And, without quite knowing why, she loved them too.
She felt something push at her, and when she turned to look, she saw another hatchling had already hatched. And she loved her sister, too. She nuzzled her gently, happy to not be alone.
But it still wasn’t over. The large, round...were they...eggs? How did she know these things? They began rocking, and soon her brothers were born. One was a guardian like herself, and the other a skydancer, like her sister.
They quickly became the best of friends, because she couldn’t help but love them. Her entire nature appeared to be love.
While her siblings all rolled about together, playing, she tended to help their parents with...well...anything! She couldn’t imagine ever leaving them.
Then one night, deep in sleep, Vidaice had a dream. The Tidelord, the very dragon she was modeled after, came to her, and whispered in her ear of a lair far away from her own. He whispered about how loving she was, and how caring she was.
Then he said, “Vidaice, go to that lair. They could use your sweetness, your gentle spirit.”
It startled Vidaice so much that she awoke. Gasping, she ran to her parents, and told them of her dream.
Bronice, her father, furrowed his brow, and for a moment, she was afraid he was angry. Then, in a quiet voice, he said, “I suppose if the Tidelord asks it of you, I shouldn’t try to stop you.”
She threw herself against him, and sobbed quietly into his leg. “But, Daddy, I never wanted to leave home!”
He and her mother nuzzled her, and her mother quietly said, “Neither did your father, once upon a time. But the time came for him to leave his home, and the time came for me to leave mine. Who knows, perhaps you’ll even find a mate in your new home.”
The small hatchling sniffled, and finally nodded. “Yes, maybe I will. But I’m still a bit young for a mate….”
Her parents laughed, then her father said, “You also get to carry the name of the Ice Cube dragons further than our clan. Just imagine that! Ice Cube dragons in every clan in the world!”
Diyaice, her mother, laughed. “Bron, I’m not planning to have enough children for there to be Ice Cube babies in every clan.”
“Well, obviously not. Our little Vidaice here will be having some of her own.”
Vidaice let out a squeak and flew from her parents, singing loudly to cover any more talk of her getting a mate.
Then it was time to pack. She packed her meager possessions, and made her way to the crossroads. There, she tearfully told her parents and siblings goodbye...and went on to her new home.
