Lore
Ivor was happy with his parents, Thranduil and Firebab. He lived in Clan Jennelli and couldn’t have been happier. He knew nothing about his extended family, and frankly, he didn’t care.
Well…he didn’t care until he began fighting in the coliseum more and more often. He was confused, beause before that, he had merely spent time with his father, enjoying their time together, and discussing the strange ice crystals that formed across their bodies, despite being fire dragons.
His father told him that he believed the ice crystals were somehow inherited from his grandmother, Ivor’s great-grandmother, Irri. He barely remembered his grandmother, or his own parents, BloodIce and IceWoman, although he remembered the ice crystals that stretched across their scales, and the frost that dusted his grandmother’s.
However, he always added, Ivor’s scales were different…they were dark, whereas BloodIce and IceWoman were covered in light colored ice crystals.
When Ivor began fighting in the Coliseum so often, he found himself filled with confusion. No one would tell him what was going on, all he knew was that he had to fight day after day. He grew stronger, but had no desire to continue fighting, and finally managed to receive answers from his father.
“I...I’m sorry, Ivor….” Thranduil said guiltily, lowering his mighty head to the ground. “You…you have been being trained to go fight with the deities….”
“What?!” Screamed Ivor, barely able to contain his rage. “To fight with the deities is supposed to be an honor…a choice! Not something forced upon someone!”
“While for many dragons it is a choice, and one they embrace willingly, there are…many dragons who are coerced into it, because their clan is full, or because the leaders grow greedy for the treasure the deities send.”
“But…why me?”
Thranduil shrugged hopelessly. “Our clan keeps growing…we need more room….”
Ivor struggled to accept his fate, but knew that he must…there was nothing else he could do. So he continued to fight, his heart growing heavier with each battle.
“Ivor!” Thranduil came running to his son with more joy than Ivor could understand. Why should his father be so happy when his son was to be sent away to fight with the deities…when his own mother had already been sent to fight with the deities!
Ivor turned wordlessly to his father, he had no words to say.
“BloodIce is willing to take you in! I was right, the ice crystals are hereditary, and they’re very pleased to hear that you also have the ice. BloodIce’s daughter, Iceanna, has chosen not to carry on the Ice-line, and without her, the line will die. If you go, there will be three of the Ice-line in their clan. BloodIce, Iceanna, and you, Ivor.”
Ivor hesitated for a moment, “And I wouldn’t have to go fight with the deities?”
Smiling widely, Thranduil shook his head, “No! You’d go live with my father and grandmother…and your aunt!”
Ivor couldn’t believe his luck. He would get to meet others covered in the ice, like he was…and be free from the deity’s war. He agreed immediately, and was in his new home before nightfall.
BloodIce and IceWoman invited him in immediately, and he soon got to know his aunt, Iceanna, who didn’t live with the rest of the family, but lived instead with her mate, FireIce, with the rest of the clan’s advisors.
Ivor was so happy and excited to be part of the Ice-family…but he didn’t fit in. His name was Ivor. His aunt’s name was Iceanna, his grandparents’ names were BloodIce and IceWoman. Irri wasn’t truly of the Ice-line, it was just her frost that had contributed to the frozen ice crystals that decorated the hides of her icy descendants. His name did not fit with his family.
He went to his grandfather, and begged him to rename him. “I hate my name! Not because…not because I hate my name…but…I want to be like the rest of our family….”
“Ivor is a lovely name….” BloodIce told him.
“Yes….” Ivor agreed, rather grudgingly.
“And yet you can’t be content?”
“How can I carry on the Ice-line, if I am only ice in body, but not in name?”
BloodIce mused on this for a moment, before quietly telling his grandson, “If that’s truly how you feel, I have a name for you. Bronice.”
“Bronice? But…Grandfather…what does it mean?”
“Bron means “dark”, it means DarkIce…because you are indeed, the darkest of the Ice-line.”
Bronice walked away with his head lifted high. He was the darkest of the ice, wasn’t he. But now there was one more problem with carrying on the Ice-line. He was mateless…and he wasn’t going to do as his grandfather had done, and search the lands for a mate like himself. He would wait.
His waiting did pay off, for a new dragon came to the clan. She was beautiful…covered in light ice crystals. She took the name Diyaice (Diya meaning light), because she was intrigued by the dark dragon, who bore a name opposite of hers…and the dark dragon? He was intrigued by the light dragon.
He soon realized that pursuing this dragon as his mate was going to be harder than he had originally anticipated. She wasn’t shy, but she was very flighty. She watched everyone through narrowed eyes, always suspicious. Bronice was no exception.
It was night, the moon shone down upon the dragons, many of which were sleeping—but not Bronice. He was patrolling the lair, making sure everyone was safe. Not Diyaice either. She was sneaking out of the food hoard, taking some back to her own sleeping quarters. Bronice caught her before she had even taken five steps out of the hoard.
“What are you doing?!” He roared. They didn’t have an unlimited supply of food, and everyone got their share when it was feeding time.
She jumped, and promptly dropped the food on the ground, then looked Bronice in the eye. She didn’t appear proud or angry, but terrified.
Bronice softened his voice, “Why are you stealing food? Don’t you get enough at feeding times?”
She lowered her head. “I’m not used to having enough….” She said softly, gathering up the food, and returning it to the food hoard.
“What do you mean?” Bronice asked softly.
“The clan I grew up in…I wasn’t well-liked…so I didn’t get as much food as I needed. I…I had to hunt it down myself…or steal it…it’s in my nature to steal, so I was taking some food as a safety, just in case…the clan decided they didn’t like or want me…and I had to feed myself.”
“Well, that’s not happening here. I would make sure you had food, no matter what. Don’t worry yourself, Diyaice…just go to bed.”
“You…you won’t tell anyone, will you?” She asked hesitantly, backing away from him.”
He sighed softly, “Of course not. I’ve resolved the problem, this is your first infraction…and…I’m partial to you.”
Her light blue face slowly stained purple and she turned and ran back to her quarters.
The next night, Bronice found her sitting outside of the food hoard again…without food this time.
“What are you doing?” He asked her softly.
“Waiting for you…I…I was hoping you would be patrolling tonight again.”
“And what did you plan to do when I showed up?”
She tilted her face up toward him, “Ask if I could come sleep with you tonight.”
He was startled. “You what?”
“I’m cold and lonely…please don’t leave me alone.” There was a certain edge to her voice, she was pleading.
He hesitated. “You…you want to come sleep in my lair with me tonight? Because you’re cold and lonely?”
“I may be partial to you as well….” She whispered, repeating his words from the night before.
Against his better judgment, he said yes.
Then, the next night, she said yes. To being his mate.
