The hatchling took her first breath deep in the hold of the Necessity whilst a storm howled around the buckling skyship. Her tiny lungs expanded and contracted in the beat between lightning strike and thunderclap, her plaintive call to her mother lost in the crew's frantic rush to secure cargo. Her older sister added her own indignant shriek to the ruckus, attracting the attention of a coatl with a single stunted wing. The coatl immediately dropped the bundle of silks she had been carrying, and rushed over to the squalling hatchlings, cooing a greeting.
"Oh, hello little ones! You have quite the sense of timing, don't you? Just hold on, and I'll fetch your mother for you!" Taking only a second more to scan the younger hatchling's eyes again, the coatl darted off. Before too long, the hatchlings were approached by a large, pale white imperial male. The ship had been listing heavily too and fro, frightening the clutch of hatchlings, and the arrival of such a large dragon who was clearly not their mother was too much for the flame-eyed hatchling. She crawled backwards from the imposing looking imperial, before hitting the edge of the fabric lined nest. A small lick of flame, on a cold, tempered plane
it's edge slicing like a sword that maims
it's curdling power, pushing back over
Covering the frost that it once used as cover
but now the mother is gone
now it's time for the fire of withdrawn
As a boat floats on sea
it's original 20 turning into three
a fire grows deep within
coloring blue scales
and devouring all memories of kin
for now she is a walking blaze
the sadness she hides behind the burning haze
