Biography

Ripley
Deeprealm Runestone

Nightfall Starsilk Cloak
There’s more to magic than the elements of the eleven, you know. Ripley could tell you, he’s a long-time practitioner of runic magic, and it’s served him quite well. It requires a fair amount of setup, unlike most elemental magic, but it can do a lot more if used properly. Ripley started learning rune magic at a young age and fell in love with it immediately. He’d always been weaker than nearly all his siblings in raw magical power, and the versatility of this refined magic finally gave him the ability to do things his siblings couldn’t.

As it happens, being weak magically has its own advantages. The magic Ripley leaks into Sornieth is exceedingly subtle, a pebble suspended in the air here, a vague sense of dread there. No one would ever know he’s not the ordinary dragon he claims to be. So he spends his days as a clan mage, solving problems with a few well-placed runes and teaching some of his tricks to hatchlings, in exchange for food and shelter. He has a helpful nature and a charming demeanor that help keep anyone from getting too concerned about his strange mannerisms or spotty knowledge of Sornieth.

Of course, it’s all in pursuit of the family business. Ripley’s abyssal nature manifests through his magic, so that every rune carved weakens the boundaries between Sornieth and the aether just a little. The friendliness, however, is genuine. Ripley likes being part of a community, learning about his clanmates lives, and helping them. His work is helping them, too. He knows that they’ll be better off when his work is done, even if they wouldn’t understand that. It’s hard to keep his family a secret sometimes, especially from the apprentices he’s fond of taking. But his mission is too important to risk.
