Bloodmoon of the Gentle Moon
Ryutsuki and Tsukuyomi share lore. To know everything, please read both!

War.

Never a pleasant thing, but even worse when one is caught in the midst of it.

Two Water clans greatly opposed each other, with one being in the Fishspine Reef, and one being on the Tsunami Flats. Ryutsuki was part of the underwater clan, training beneath the waves for a coastal war he knew nothing about. He was put into the training program as a young hatchling, and continued his apprenticeship underneath another dragon into his adolescence. During that time, he was old enough to understand what was happening between his clan and the other, but not the reasons behind the conflict, if any.

He'd heard things from his superiors, all the higher ups that were involved in planning strategic maneuvers designed for furthering the bloodshed. Supposedly, the enemy clan was highly reverent of the moon, and not so much the Tidelord. Ryutsuki's clan, being devoted to the point of obsessing over the disappearance of said deity, blamed the other clan for being the reason that the Tidelord decided to seemingly forsake his people.

It was due to this that the war had blossomed like a deadly rose.

Similarly, like said flower, its petals were being picked off one by one. With every battle, every defeat, the enemy clan was marching its army closer. On the seabed, skirmishes and ambushes happened much more frequently now. The conflict was practically at their doorstep, and yet there was nothing that they could do. Ryutsuki was aware that the clan's best warriors were falling and dropping like flies. Murky silhouettes of their bodies remained on the ocean floor, waiting for some fish or other aquatic creature to swim along and strip their bones clean.

Ryutsuki had been sent out with a medium sized army. The purpose of this outing was for him to get some time in the field out on the war front, but to also serve as a scouting trip. Provided that the enemy didn't catch scent of them in the current, all would go smoothly, and this trip would be fine. Of course, there was always the option of a hasty retreat, but his commander was hoping that it wouldn't come to that. Neither Ryutsuki nor his superiors wanted to deal with yet another battle, so he was warned to keep stealth in mind when traveling.

He led his squad closer to dangerous territory, swimming along as quietly as they could within enemy waters. All was well, until harpoons rained down upon them, spearing multiple dragons wherever they could hit them. A surprise attack; they’d been spotted. Unlike other dragon clans, who could usually roar commands since they had wars above ground, Water clans didn’t have that luxury. Sound wouldn’t travel through the tides fast enough for that to be effective, and it would sound muffled anyways. Instead, they were forced to use hasty sign language, any other form of body language, or elemental runes encased in bubbles that would exist only long enough to get the intended message across before popping.

Due to this reason, most inter-clan warfare among the Water dragonflight would look hilarious, if not downright unserious in nature, to any outsiders. Bubbles were everywhere, erupting from dragon mouths in a show of commands and orders, or as a silent howl of agony. The water was tinged crimson, and Ryutsuki couldn’t see where he was going. He had spotted a single rune amidst the bloody carnage that said, “retreat,” and he was heeding that order.

Darting through the water, Ryutsuki narrowly dodged the weapons that were plunging down beneath the waves, and then the dragons that came down with them. Whenever an enemy got in his way, he’d use brute force to grab onto them, slash the gills on the sides of their necks open, and then push them farther underwater. It was a harsh and slow end, intended to leave his opponent to drown after they were unable to filter water for the oxygen that was crucial for survival, but it was necessary in battle.

Ryutsuki kept swimming even after he had left the wargrounds, dead set on continuing until he made it back to his clan.

Well… what was left of his clan.

The Wildclaw paused his frantic swimming, his mouth agape in horror at what he was seeing. The enemy clan had a second squadron that was decimating his home clan, sparing no one. They must have had this one lying in wait, having either predicted the scouting mission beforehand, or intercepted it somehow. Now, Ryutsuki was forced to watch as they dove down, skewering dragons that he cared about with their spears.

Something told him not to get involved, but he didn’t listen. Why would he? Maybe, if he had been in his right mind at that moment, he would have listened to his own common sense, but he didn’t. He refused to, having cast that aside in favor of pure, boiling rage. A Wildclaw’s prestige lies in their prowess in battle. Hadn’t he been taught that at a young age until it was practically ingrained in his skull? He had already decided to flee from one fight, so he would not flee from this one. In an attempt to show his worth, he entered the fray of battle against his better judgement.

As expected, it went about as horribly as he thought it would. Within mere minutes of trying to be brave, he was viciously attacked by a Mirror, her claws raking across the right side of his face. When he pushed her off, he found himself tangled up with a Spiral, the other dragon attempting to constrict him to death with his body. Ryutsuki tore at the other’s abdomen once he got underneath his armor, his sickle shaped claws puncturing the scaly skin and then cutting along the body horizontally. Ryutsuki pushed the writhing Spiral aside into the Mirror as he saw a red cloud of blood erupt into the water surrounding the two.

Ryutsuki soon breached the surface of the water, knowing he was in over his head the moment he’d tried to save his doomed clan. After a moment of deliberation, he dipped back down, but headed in the opposite direction as whatever remained of his home. He should have known better. He should have known to not get involved. There are some things you can’t change.

Ryutsuki wandered aimlessly over the course of a week or two, give or take. He had no idea where he was, who he was anymore, or where he was going. The wounds he had sustained some time ago still stung from time to time, as he had left them untreated, and there was a sharp decline in his body weight from not eating as much as he used to. It was beginning to become obvious that Ryutsuki wasn’t properly taking care of himself.

He dragged himself onshore, his feet sinking into the marshy ground as he trudged onward. He didn’t know why he kept going anymore. Not long after thinking such a thing, his legs shook and then gave out, his body worn ragged due to a mix of fatigue and hunger. A long, weary sigh left him and stirred up any plant life on the ground slightly with the small puff of air. His energy was spent. He would not die as a warrior.

That’s what he thought initially.

Ryutsuki was tenderly scooped up by a much larger talon. He wouldn’t know his savior until he was fully conscious, but he felt the way they held him as if he were far more fragile than he was. His exhausted body was set upon some other dragon’s back, and Ryutsuki found himself burying his snout into the short fur located there. Despite being on the brink of unconsciousness, his tired mind was trying to figure out what kind of dragon found him. It couldn’t have been a Skydancer, as he was certain that those dragons couldn’t support a Wildclaw’s weight. The only other option that occurred to him was an Imperial, but why would one of those willingly save him, of all things?

He would know soon enough.

Ryutsuki’s eyes fluttered for a moment before shutting as he drifted off to sleep.
