Biography

Some say there's a spirit in the haunted wreckage of the Hewn City, threatening to steal the soul of anyone who dares enter. Others say that the darkness under the city takes the form of a dragon during the nights, causing horrors one can't imagine. What everyone can agree on is that you do not venture into the city's underground during the night unless you wish to see things dragons are not meant to see.

Apatite knows of the rumors, and she laughs. If there is a spirit, or some sort of darkness incarnate, she has never met it in all her life spent underground. It never occurs to her to believe that she is the spirit in question.

Ever since she can remember, she's lived in the darkness of the underground. The only light she ever sees is from the grates in the ceiling, and even then the light is weak. Still, weak or not, she avoids it, preferring to spend her time in the shadows.

Tunnels no one has ever explored are home, and the mysteries and dangers of the Hewn City are old friends. Many dragons try to come into her home, but she doesn't like the disturbance. At first, she chases them off physically, but as she ages she discovers better ways.

Apatite can't begin to say where she learned her magic, it seemed to manifest on its own. By controlling the light, the intensity and absence of it, she is able to control the shadows. With that power, she keeps the underground nice and dark, the shadows impenetrable as she sucks the light into herself and hides it from the world.

Light dragons always want to uncover the truth, and Apatite is no different. She seeks to know people completely, their virtues and flaws all laid bare to her. Through her magic, she is able to turn those back upon the dragon she's meeting, either showing them how good they are, or driving them into despair. Of course it is always the latter, why does she want to lift up dragons that are trespassing in her home?

There's always the exception to the rule. A dragon of shadow visits her home, looking to explore and learn of the mysteries surrounding the ruins. Apatite skulks around in the shadows, watching, waiting...

This dragon, however, is not scared of the dark that swirls around them. If anything, they relish in it. They seem to be as at home in the tunnels as Apatite is, and that sparks curiosity.

Instead of chasing the dragon out immediately, Apatite follows them, listening to them talk to themselves as they explore. It was through them talking to themself that Apatite learns more about her home. This dragon is knowledgeable, and worth keeping around.

The shadow dragon stays for days, a constant stream of talking following them as they explore. They can't stay forever though, their rations run out eventually and they must find their way back to the surface.

Apatite, for the first time in her life, realizes she would miss them. She breaks her silence for the first time, her voice rusty with disuse, and asks the dragon to stay.

Instead of scaring the dragon, they smile. It surprises Apatite and as if they could tell, the dragon explains that they knew Apatite was there all along. The dragon goes on to tell Apatite of a world of darkness deeper than the underground, of secrets hidden waiting for someone to uncover them.

Desire flares to life in Apatite's heart, but she was scared. The underground of the Hewn City is all she had ever known, to leave that haven felt... wrong.

The shadow dragon did not argue, did not push, they simply left the offer and a map for Apatite before they return to the surface. Apatite never did see that dragon again, but they left an everlasting impression on her.

It takes months for Apatite to work up the nerve to leave, and once the sunlight hits her she turns right back around. It burns, more than just her eyes, the warmth is too much for a creature that survives in the cool and damp underground. She tries again at night, the moonlight much easier on her eyes but still too bright. After a long time crouching at the entrance of her home, she finally sets out.

It takes her longer than she would have liked to reach Wispwillow Grove, having to endure the wretched sun at least once, but as soon as she crosses the border it was like coming home. It doesn't take long for a clan to find her, and at first she chases them off as she has always done, but they come back. Impressed with her powers, they offer her a place to stay, food, wealth, anything she could desire.

For the first time in her life, Apatite finds herself surrounded by dragons who call themselves her clanmates. She isn't sure how to feel about the newfound camaraderie, but she supposes that she'll get used to it. And if anyone tries to cross her, well, she could always show them the horrors they harbor within.
