Middlemist Pass cannot hold Pamina forever. It is a truth that the Commander continues to avoid, one that his second refuses to obfuscate, and one day, it will face every dragon in these mountains, bearing consequences that once could have been avoided.
Perhaps Pamina would be more forgiving if she had not been locked in an icy dungeon, shackled to stone that threatens to freeze every time the sun dips below the horizon. For years, her captors have neglected the frost creeping up her extremities, and even the youngest and most compassionate of them are guarded against allowing Pamina near fire.
They should be. She would turn it on them in an instant, boiling them from the inside out and relishing their screams in the process.
But that requires more strength than she possesses at this time, more planning than she has yet accomplished. If she is going to escape this icy fortress and return to her lair deep in the mountains, she must first reckon with the beasts that besiege the pass. They have no true names that she knows of, but in her eavesdropping, she has heard them dubbed the Middlemist Terror and the Middlemist Scourge.
It is a testament to their effectiveness, to their destruction, that such names have persisted despite the Commander's refusal to cede any ground. He believes that naming them in such a way grants them power and generates fear, a sound philosophy. But his soldiers are young and slowly freezing to death, their supplies reaching the pass infrequently and their resolve dwindling.
The beasts have won a critical victory, wearing the Commander's forces down like this.
But it will be up to Pamina to strike the final blow. She will have her revenge for this insult and many others, and while the rest of the garrison perishes in the cold, she will at last be the witch she once was, mistress of the frozen peaks and the only power shy of the Icewarden to hold such dominion over the Southern Icefields.
Biding her time is a necessary evil. But it will be worth it, waiting to watch the commander devoured by the Scourge or the Terror, whichever one is hungrier.
Or, Pamina thinks, whichever one she can convince to join her cause.
