Biography
■
piera second in command | ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ |
Piera reigns as the Commander's Second, and her soldiers sometimes treat her like a queen. Their devotion does not warm her heart, though, because it represents a flaw in their training, a weak plate in their armor. For every ounce of unconditional loyalty they place in her, they seem to give up the ability to think for themselves.
When she gives up her life on the battlefield, what will they do then? After all, she does not intend to die any other way. And if she does not have a successor by the time war calls her, she cannot be certain what will become of her troops.
She supposes most of them will follow the Commander, which is not an unwise choice. He is, after all, Piera's superior in rank. But he is not the leader she is, and for some thirty years, she has been waiting for him to make a fatal mistake, for him to die at last. By some divine providence, he has not made that mistake yet, but it is only a matter of time before his age and arrogance join hands and plunge into the afterlife together.
If she did not owe her life to the Commander, she might have set his death into motion already, hastening the hands of fate on her own. But he saved her those thirty years ago, bringing her back from an icy grave and putting a blade in her hand. He trusted her to protect Middlemist Pass from any threat, because she had survived the worst the Southern Icefields had to offer.
Except there is worse in this era. Beset by the Middlemist Terror and Middlemist Scourge, the pass is gradually failing. Piera cannot fight hunger or the cold, as much as she needs to in order to maintain morale. The beasts of the mountains have begun to attack supply caravans, and they make hunting an exercise in survival and aerial combat, rather than another simple task for the day.
If she is to ever see a shred of command higher than her current position, or even the future of Middlemist Pass, she must rally what remains of her forces and drive the beasts out. Whatever claim they believe they have over the pass, she will disabuse them of the notion and set matters straight.
These are her mountains, and she has no equal within them. To challenge her is to fail. It always has been, and always will be so.
