Buttercup loves two things: magic and dodos, and not necessarily in that order. He brought home his first dodo after a scouting excursion into harpy territory. The rest of the clan was amused and allowed him to keep the bird, promising not to eat it. Buttercup has slowly adopted more dodos, to the consternation of the clan elders. He has woven roosts for them all, next to his own, and herds them around like a benevolent parent. Some members of the clan have jokingly compared his love for the dodos to a Guardian's attachment to their Charge. Upon learning that Buttercup's mother was, in fact, a Guardian, some others have begun to wonder if there is a genetic component to his affection.

When he is not tending to his ever growing flock, Buttercup spends his time improving his magical abilities. Though he prefers tinkering and enchanting to battle magic, he has gone out into the field with Edelweiss and Solace, where he has proved a formidable ally. Lately, he has become something of a mentor to Strawberry, though Buttercup admits his knowledge of alchemy is limited.
