As smart as she is beautiful, Helena is happiest when working with something noisy, electrical, and generally dangerous. Her golem, affectionately named Astrid, fetches tools for the young inventor and also serves as a deterrent to those who would interrupt her handler. Materials are often hard to come by given the remote location of the lair, which means that Helena has resigned herself to working on more "practical" things that do not whizz, bang, boom, or ultimately do anything interesting. (Helena has been quoted as saying, "If there's no possibility of an explosion or risk of dismemberment, then what's the point?") As a result, she greets traveling traders with an eager friendliness unusual for a Pearlcatcher.

Her knack for inventing is not limited to the metals and machinery that come from the Tempest Spire; Helena is largely responsible for the system of pulleys and lifts the clan uses to transport food and goods. Made from sturdy vines and wooden planks, the inner workings of the pulleys are disguised by hollow tree trunks, packed sod, and trap doors. This system connects the larder and kitchens, as well as the clan's communal hoard.
