Kai was born with an unusual condition that makes life challenging in many ways. Not least of which is the discrimination she faced for many years, even from her own parents. Her sheltered upbringing taught her manners, discipline, and duty, but also made her rather shy. While she dearly loves her sister Gerda, she tends to avoid everyone else, especially when she's stressed. And even Gerda doesn't seem to quite understand her desire for a life beyond the little town where they grew up.

In her spare time, Kai loves designing things. She dabbles in all kinds of artistry, from sculpture to architecture to fashion, though her responsibilities to her community keep her from pursuing any of them too closely. Still, she is happy. She has her sister's encouragement and her community's respect, and that will have to be enough.
