Biography

Alderamin’s caretaker, and a notorious grump, Rowan is a dragon of few words and even fewer bonds. He doesn’t get along with pretty much anyone but his young charge, and he has no desire to try - the only reason he interacts with his fellow clan members at all is at Alderamin’s behest. The other members of the quiet star view him with suspicion and vague unease, and they are aware that the feeling is mutual, but Rowan is tolerated and largely ignored for Alderamin’s sake.

Rowan wasn’t always such an anti-social dragon - he was born in a clan with a very tightly knit community, and the dragons within would die to protect each other without a second thought. The problem was that this sense of comradery was fueled by hatred and spite. Rowan’s birth clan was made up entirely of Imperials, all rejected in one way or another after the Lightbringer’s denunciation of them - either driven out of their previous clans because there were too many of them in the area, or ostracized and attacked by former friends and loved ones who were disgusted by what they could become. These vengeful outcasts congregated in a hidden cave in the Arcanist's domain, where they remained hidden and formed a society of their own. They renounced the Lightbringer as she had renounced them, as well as all the other Deities they had previously served, and began to worship the very thing that had caused the world to reject them - the Emperors. All other dragons were deemed beneath them, because they lacked the ability to “rise again” after death, and Pearlcatchers in particular were reviled for their status as the Imperial’s replacement. As this philosophy escalated, the clan began purposely turning their dead into Emperors, holding them in lower caverns that had been fortified to prevent them from rampaging. Ritual sacrifices of clan members began, with volunteers stepping up eagerly to “claim their destiny” and join their kin forever in an "ascended state". This was the environment Rowan grew up in. He was told that when he reached maturity, he would be killed and fused with his brothers and sisters, and he was excited for this: he believed it to be a great honor and his life's one true purpose. The day before his execution was scheduled, the den was raided. The large amount of magic energy generated by the creation of multiple Emperors had drawn the attention of the deities. The adults were executed, the Emperors destroyed, and the younger members of the clan scattered across the world with a warning to never reunite lest they try to finish what their parents had started. Rowan wandered the world, and during this time he became even more confused and resentful. After seeing what a normal life was like and meeting other dragons, he knew that his clan had been preaching falsehoods, and that they’d attempted to turn him into an abomination. Despite his new perspective, he still resented the Lightbringer and the Deities for the murder of his parents and clan mates, the suffering and rejection they’d brought upon the Imperials, and his very existence. As a result, he had difficulty trusting other dragons and continued to wander the world refusing to join a clan. This changed when he met Alderamin - the little dragon was so friendly, so innocent, that it moved Rowan’s shattered heart. He immediately adopted the tiny little guy, and swore that his perpetual childhood would never see the suffering and sick experiments that Rowan’s had. The two of them settled in the Quiet Star because Rowan knew that even though he himself could not form healthy relationships, a loving, non-toxic community, and a diverse collection of dragons would be important for Alderamin's mental health.
Job: Hunter/Gatherer, Alderamin's Caretaker and Protector
Alignment: Arcane, but has no knowledge of magic and no desire to learn
Bonds: Is completely dedicated to Alderamin and no one else. Views Arachne with less suspicion than the others because of her gentle attitude towards hatchlings. Avoids the other Imperials in the clan.
